We need to know what your operating system is etc before we can suggest anything.

You mean 7 GB of hard drive space I'm assuming.

I'm still confused by your post.

Do you have Windows Explorer in Start, All Programs, Accessories?

Does it start okay in Safe Mode?

Do you have System Restore turned on?

    When did this problem occur?

to answer all of your questions... i dont know how to make it load in safe mode, so i dont know if it loads in safe mode. i do have system restore on, and it happened about 6 months ago, but ive been trying to fix it and just found these forums.

To start in Safe Mode, reboot, and repeatedly tap F8, then select Safe Mode from options.

You could try Last Known Good Configuration, but as this happened 6 months ago, it's doubtful, and System Restore isn't an option either.

Do you have a Windows CD?

Without a Windows CD your options suddenly become limited.

I'm not an expert on Recovery CD's. What brand is the PC, maybe someone who is familiar with it can offer advice?

It's not looking good if it won't start in Safe Mode.

Just to clarify, you don't have a Recovery CD or Windows CD, just a partition (section) on your hard drive with HP recovery files?

If that's the case, there isn't much you can do. You need either to reinstall or repair.

Can you run anything, can you access the registry (regedit)?

Look for the two entries below and see if they are present.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe
