    Hi,

Recently on my laptop I'm not able to access any internet pages but theres nothing wrong with the connection because I can access there internet with other programs such as Soulseek.

It seems to be a DNS error of some sort but I dont know what to do.

Can anyone give me some help! Thanks.

TimW, I dont think that is the problem because its still happens when i'm not using soulseek, and from what i read from that article the cause from the problems should be from to many TCP connections attemps...

Is there any way so that I can find out what error is causing this problem?

Control panel / admin tools / event viewer / either under applications or system .....for the errors ...each should have a link for $MS )

    Could also try these:
Clear (flush) the DNS cache manually (run "ipconfig /flushdns") (start / run / "type" cmd / enter / then type the above without qoutes)

Turn off unsuccessful ("negative") DNS caching
(Applies only to Windows XP and Windows 2000.) Unsuccessful ("negative") DNS caching can be disabled by adding three Registry Values (NegativeCacheTime, NetFailureCacheTime, and NegativeSOACacheTime, all not normally present), setting them to zero. Since manual editing of the Registry is a tricky and risky business, I've provided a simple Registry script to do the job. (Click the link to start the download; save the script to your desktop; and then double-click on it to run it. When you get "Are you sure you want to add the information ..." dialog box, click Yes. The script can be tossed into the Recycle Bin after it has been run.) There is no real downside to making these changes -- just delay if you make repeated tries to an invalid Internet name. (Nevertheless, please note that you use this script at your own risk, and that it's always a good idea to back up your Registry before making any change.)

OK, before I try your suggestion this is what I found...

In the Event Viewer / Aplicattions there where some errors related to the IE

    1st one
    Type: Error
    Origin: Application Hang
Description: Turning of the application explorer.exe, version 6.0.29000.2180, module of turning of hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, location of turning of 0x0000000

    2nd one

    Type: Error
    Origin: Application error
Description: Application in fault drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, module in fault dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, adress in fault 0x0001295d

    3rd one

    Type: Error

Description: Application in fault explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, module in fault divxdec.ax, version 5.2.1.1335, adress in fault 0x00003c18

Does this make any sense to you?

PS:the words may not be accurate besause my windows is in portuguese..

Right click on my network places / properties / right click on local area connection / click on tcp/ip then properties / check that obtain ip address and obtain dns server address are both marked as automatic ...

    moritz Private E-2

Im sorry I took so long but I'm having a hard time fiinding the network places, where is that?

And also i've downloaded the software you recommended but how can I make a back up of the registry?

  15. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Hold of on the reg. fix ....last ditch.

Start / Control panel / network connections ...should then show local area connection / right click and choose properties ...then tcp/ip and properties ...should be on the general tab.

  16. moritz

    moritz Private E-2

    Ok theyre both in automatic...

But what do you mean, I shouldnt make tha registry fix?

  17. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

They were already in automatic, or did yo just change them ...at which point you could be good to go?
Reg fixes are sort of a last ditch ....wanted to find out if other things were poss. causing the problem.

Here is how to do a registry backup (set a system restore point also, before you do any reg, editing).
Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.
System Restore (it should save a copy daily, but you can always create a restore point manually.
The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available - and it's free!!!

Try a winsock fix. At a command prompt, type: netsh winsock reset Press Enter. Wait for it to finish and reboot.

My "potuguese" is rusty, but the ipconfig looks good .....would try this suggestion, after doing Matacumbies latest suggestion .....connect directly to your router with a wire ....reboot and let it establish an ip and dns ...then see if you connect.

Just runned the Winsock fix rebooted and still I cant access internet pages...

Not sure what you mean by this ....could you do a different type test ...download firefox and save to a cd then install on the laptop and see if it runs ok (Firefox:

  36. moritz

The same thing happened with the Firefox..

But I'm now on my laptop conected directly to the router and the IE is working normally, so the problem must be the router?

Wireless card .....more likely ....click network connections ....(had been thinking you were not on wireless, ergo the local connection properties ...wrong we need to check the wireless properties) ..right click on wireless network / properties / tcp/ip / properties and again check on the auto check for ip and dns.

  38. moritz

    moritz Private E-2

Yes the wireless card was the problem... its ok now. I guess the rebooting without the card and again with the card did it... simple :)
