Windows Explorer (XP) hangs

I have a problem that just won't go away. My Windows XP Explorer hangs for lengthy periods when I try to navigate my second hard drive. It is a 200GB Western Digital with a single partition (NTFS). I have checked for viruses with AVG and spyware with both Spybot & Adaware. I am able to navigate the entire drive with no problems from a DOS window so I know that the computer is able to communicate with the hard drive. I thought the indexing service might be the problem but it is activated so, if I understand correctly, it should be able to quickly access file information. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

is this a new hard drive that you recently installed?

if so, i hope you did not use any installation disks that came with it.......

 

The hard drive is about one year old which I pulled it out of another box that had Win2K on it. I didn't have to use the Western Digital install disk (because it was already formatted & had data on it) but I did have to download & install a driver that was compatible with XP. I think I remember it had something to do with XP's hard drive limitation of 134 or 137GB. BTW, I'm using XP Pro with Service Pack 2.
I'm beginning to wonder if the Indexing Service database was corrupted. This evening, I disabled the Indexing Service & when I did a search for files in Windows Explorer, it took no more time than when the Indexing Service was enabled.
