Ok, I read Major Attitude's post on " How to show system files " , I copied down the instructions (so I wouldn't forget them :( ) , but when I got to go to programs, click on accesories, then click on Windows Explorer, ......I don't have a Windows Explorer ! I have Win. Me. So where else can I find Windows Explorer ?? I checked 3 times, it's not there, I promise. :(

HI, Did you go through all the programs listed in the Start menu. It could be under a different heading.

It is a part of the OS so should show up in the menu unless someone has deleted the shortcut.

Did you chek to see if it is an icon on the desktop.

Hi guys, yes I went to the start menu and looked in EVERYTHING, not just programs & accesories , there is no "windows Explorer listed. I went to one of my files in C:\ and right clicked went to explore...it opened that file but I didn't see "system files" all I see is (under the ''windows file' ) is "syst.......syst 32.....and syst bckup " so is any of this what I'm looking for ? I get overwhelmed very easily, can anyone tell ? :D

    Thanks again guys,

yes, I have that, and I checked the show hiden files and I unchecked the hide protected operating system files,( it poped up a warning when I did ) and then I went to the start, prog, accessories, to look for the windows explorer to select a hard drive as per MA's instructions, but I can't find a windows explorer any where. I went back and checked the Hide protected operating syst. files because I could'nt find the windows explorer thing to go thru the final steps (didn't want to mess anything up ) So here I am still looking for the windows explorer thing. :D

Hi, I am 74 years old and my next door neighbour is 85. I too get a little confused mainly form a lack of oxygen. My advice is unless you want something specific leave the hidden files hidden so that nothing gets deleted by mistake.

I gave the 85 year old my daughter's win98 computer and spent 2 hours setting evrything up with him. He is nearly blind for a start and peers at the monitor from about 3 inches away. So it was all set up and he knew it was 2nd. hand so he deleted all the files that were not his. ALL of them including most of the operating service. We had to start again from scratch. LOL

If you can't find Windows explorer or make a short cut to it try dling Total Commander and try that. It is shareware and you have to click on the splah screen each time you use it but I rather it than WE.

Ok guys, I'm back !:D I need help, yes again. I don't know if I have low oxygen or not, I shopldn't, I sleep under oxygen every nite ! But any way back to my last question. When I boot up I have a desktop that comes up....this is my 'newest' desk top which is also configured to hook up with my ISP. Now I also have an older desktop/ID that comes up when I boot up in 'safe mode' , but this is one I did way back when I got my pc , this one is NOT configured to hook up with my ISP, and it doesn't have a lot of my newer icons (AVG , CClean , Cleanup!, etc.). Now my question is, how do I get rid of the old desktop/ID ,or whatever the the tech term is ??

    Thanks & God bless,
    WandaR

You should be able to get Windows Explorer running by pressing the Windows key and the E-key at the same time - hold the Windows key down first then press E. The Windows key to that key located between Ctrl (Control key) and Alt (Alternative Modifier key), all keys adjcent to the space bar.

However, back to the "desktop/ID", these are called user accounts and you can add, change or remove these by the Users control panel applet - Start/Settings/Control Panel and double click Users.

You should also be able to see the old accounts by opening Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start button and select Explore, which should then open your current account folder under Profiles, among others.

When you boot into safe mode, it only runs the barebones Windows operating system and the drivers and other programs that came with it. It won't start any programs that are not part of Windows or display your personalized desktop. Just let it boot normally and you won't see it. It's not something that can be deleted.

Thankx guys. Maxwel, I did what you said...."You should also be able to see the old accounts by opening Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start button and select Explore, which should then open your current account folder under Profiles, among others." But it only displays my current desk top/ ID ....
Just Playin, I thought I was suppose to go to 'safe mode' to scan for Trojans and such, but if I don't have my right icons, I can't. The older desk top has all of my older icons, which now I can't even remember what they were !! But anyway, as long as my pc is cleaned up that's the important thing, and it is , finally. :D
Oh and when I did the 'windows key' and 'e' , my sreen started filling up with window after window , after window, etc till my screen was jammed and a popup said " There is not enough Memory to run this program. Close 1 or 2 progams and try again ". Well, I had to reboot and I did NOT try again !! :) Any way, I just want to say thank you , all of you who have tried so hard to help me, and now.........Coffee & Cake is served!!

You should have a list of folders on your left hand side along with your current desktop. Check that you are viewing folders as well by selecting View/Explorer Bar and check the folder option.

 Did you let go of the keys imeddiately once you've pressed them otherwise holding the Windows and E key combination will cause it to repeat its action.

Maxwell, thank you for your time and trouble. I tried the ' windows ' & 'E' keys again, without holding the ' E ' key down and....it worked !! LOL :D But the "right click" on start thing, came up differently than what you described. However to the left under "Profiles" it had Wanda....user ID plus some more stuff. The user ID has 3 empty files in it and one file that has 2 explorer things, didn't find an Explore bar. But I did go into the older desktop and update the dialup networking to my current ISP, plus the icons I couldn't see on my desktop are in the start menu, so it should be ok if/when I have to safe mode and fight off little nasty things  again it should be ok. I don't know if I told you guys or not, but I have Win Me, which isn't like anything else I've found out. But I still love playing on my pc. :D Thanks for all your help, sorry I'm such a slow student ! Yes you may claim me on your income tax next year! ;)
