windows fax

How do you set up the phone wires with Windows xp if to have a phone answering machine?
I went from the line to the pc, pc to the machine.
Any tips appreciated as to what has to be be left on etc.
I set up the fax to 4 rings, stopped voicemail, set the phone to 2 rings.
I also set the fax to both send and receive.Hopefully, I will receive faxes automatically + printe out while the pc is on and can send faxes as I wish.
The fax has to be set as the default printer.
if I am ok with most of this, how do i set up those phone lines?
