Windows Genuine Advantage Phished; We don't have to pay to "activate" a copy of Windows

Symantec is warning users of the new trojan horse that phished Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage.

Users should KNOW that activating a copy of Windows is free (online activation or using some toll-free numbers).

If ever you see got that Windows asking for credit card information to activate the copy of Windows, DO NOT enter your credit card details. Run a scan using antivirus or antimalware program. You're maybe infected with Trojan.Kardphisher!

It’s sad really... How ignorant the average user is. May they all be blessed by the plethora of knowledge to be offered here on Major Geeks!

And of course, kudos to you Nick!

I gave a family member an old desktop with XP Pro that I believed to be kosher. So I stupidly signed in for Windows verification (duh) and it came back that my XP was a bootleg and asked for AUD228.
I can't find the XP disk, but can anyone tell me how to verify my version?
If this can't be done, will any XP Security Code get Microsoft off my back?

Thanks a million, Deyamag, that li'l ol' Jellybean sure did the trick. But do you know if I can replace the XP security code of my bootleg copy with a real one? If I don't, I fear that Microsoft will shut my puter down. Let this stupidity of mine be a lesson to all Geeks not to attempt Windows Advantage.

If you turn off automatic updates you will be fine. They can't shut down your comp that way. And yes there are programs out there (can't remember names right now) that changes your Windows XP key, I don't know what you mean about a security code. There is a file in system32(I believe thats the file) that holds a program in it with an icon of a key that changes your code too.

I'm sure that someone here can be better help if I understood your problem correctly.

Parispete, depending on the bootleg copy you have its not as simple as just chaning the key as there will be other files changed, but if you already have a legit key to enter, just goto WGA and fail it, it will then give you options to buy a key or enter an already purchased one, once validated with that key, you will then be prompted to download the software to make your version legit, its actually pretty quick process.

Thanks, Halo, I'll give it a trot and see what happens. I meant 'code', by the way.
