Hey everyone, I'm new to this site. I've built computers in the past, but I have never experienced this problem. I have just finished building a new gaming computer, but when I try to install XP, or Vista it will not install.

    Here's the details.

Vista: It doesn't get past the "Windows is loading files..." screen, I've tried various copies that I have downloaded from MSDN. The only Vista CD that I've got to work is Windows Server 2008: Web Edition. No others work. I've even tried the CD version.

XP: On both, XP Pro, and XP Home, it freezes at the "Registering Components" phase. As with Vista, I've tried numerous discs in case it was the media that was bad.

If anyone has any advice that might help me solve this situation, please post it.

    My system specs are:

    CPU(s):2x AMD Athlon 64 FX-74
Graphics card: XFX GeForce 8600GTS 512MB
    RAM: G.SKILL 8GB(4 x 2GB) DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    Mother Board: ASUS L1N64-SLI WS
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 500GB
    PSU: 520-Watt Aspire

    Thanks in advance.

I believe you've hit the ram bug. To install with 4 gig or more you need an update so take out 3 sticks and install windows do the updates then reinstall rest of ram :) hope that helps

Already tried that, it still does the same things. Do you think that the PSU isn't sufficient for my system?

being aspire brand it may not be. I run an antec personally check amps on 12 volt rail. If they are under 25-30 range I would recommend new psu

    Are you using slistreamed installs?

Thanks, I just ordered a new 850 watt Rosewill PSU, so I'm hoping that will take care of the problem.

I'm not using slipstreamed installs, I'm just using downloads that I've downloaded directly from MSDN, and the discs that have been shipped to me with MSDN.

Ok, I just received the new PSU, and it's installed, but it still does the same thing...

Problem resolved. I had to stick my hard drive in another computer, and install XP on that, then swap my hard drive back to my computer.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Just curious as to how your computer is working, as you put your hard drive in another and installed XP. :)

Sorry for not posting sooner, the auto-notification didn't send...

Well, XP installed just fine, and all I had to do was install the drivers for my components. The only problem is, the computer keeps freezing up, so I RMA'd my motherboard, because it's the only thing that i haven't been able to test.
