MS didnt screw anything up. Your installer service is broken. You have the instructions to fix it; the only answer is you arent doing something quite right.

I'm not trying to make this a personal attack, I know the MS articles aren't the easiest to deal with, and some are not right. But truth is, I modified the instructions they gave. I know they work. I've done it more times myself than I can count.

There is no denying that things will break, and that they must be fixed, it will always be that way. But make no mistake, the windows installer service in its own does not self destruct. It requires user interaction.

I can offer you one more fix. This too, I know works.

A repair install. The caveat is, your OS must be the same service pack level as the CD used to perform the repair install. You will need your product key as this is essentially a reinstall of the OS.

Sorry, I figured it was a typo, as to me, that made a lot more sense than what you typed :p Maybe I was dropped on my head too many times ;)

I wish you luck on finding an alternative installer, please post if you find one.

    Thanks.

I have messed with computers for years. Helped in forums when I could and learned tons by reading them. I have never seen an alternative to microsoft installer. You may be stuck fixing it. Now I promise I am not trying to come off like a smarty pants. Like was said. Microsofts stuff can be dry and a bit hard to understand at times. Its just a bit to geeky. If there is something you don't understand about it never hesitate to ask. There is no such thing as a dumb or silly question. Myself or allot of these guys will do there best to help ya out. Have a nice day.

Here's a link to the latest release of Microsoft's Windows Installer v3.1. You should be able to download it and install it without any problems. You may need to unistall the corrupt one (if possible). Go to Add/Remove Programs, be sure the "Show Updates" box is checked, and scroll all the way down; it'll be listed as 'Windows Installer' near the end of the list. If it doesn't uninstall, try reinstalling the new one from the above link anyway. At this point, it probably can't hurt anything seeing as your installer is already trashed. You'll need to pass Windows validation before downloading....
