"Windows installer" keeps popping up?

I purchased and used RegCure PC Optimizer and ParetoLogic, big mistake. After downloading them "Windows Installer" appeared at start-up, "Please wait while Windows configures your Sonic Update Manager". I have somehow managed to stop the reference to Sonic Update Manager, but "Windows Installer" is still appearing. I click on cancel and it eventually stops.

I followed advise on this forum from 2006 which was:
Click start then run, type msconfig then press eneter and click on the startup tab, uncheck "issch" and "isuspm". Restart using Selective Startup.

    Unfortunaty this didn't work.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

Download and run the MSInstaller cleanup tool. Select the Sonic entry from the list, and click 'Clean'. That should do it. Easy, no?
Here's the link for the cleanup tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us The actual download link is about two thirds of the way down the page, right above the big grey box labeled "Contents of the Readme.txt file..." I've used this tool to fix the exact same problem you describe. It wasn't with Sonic, but I've seen the same issue many times with many different programs (Office, Roxio 6, AT&T's Browser, it can be anything that got screwy somehow). I know it works!
    Good luck!
Be sure to read the whole article so your familiar with what's going on (don't worry, it's a short one ;) )

    And welcome to MajorGeeks! :major

HELP - I have installed the MSinstaller clean up tool. Then selected Sonic Update Manager and clicked on "clear", you said, "clean", but this option dosen't exist.

When I restart my PC I still get the Preparing to install screen. Have I done something wrong?

    :confused

Instead of clear, you should have highlighted Sonic Update Manager and then clicked on Remove, which is grayed out until you select something that you want to remove. By clicking clear, you just removed Sonic as a choice from the list, you did not actually get it off of your computer.

Didn't mean "clear", its not one of the options on Windows Install Cleanup. I selected Sonic Update Manager and clicked on Remove.

I still have the "Windows installer - Preparing to install" at start-up, can anyone help me stop this.

    Hello Angela :)
Try to to do a restore and let me know how that goes/ my computer/ properties /system restore
A golden rule is to never install any software unless you are a 100% sure. Always in the first instance is to ask in the forum

Hi Angela this will take time i feel but we will press on. Can you do the following for me and let me know
    Thanks
To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on the computer, follow these steps:1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following file:
    Msi.dll
This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder.
    2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number.• If the version number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v1) installed.
    • If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed.

I'd be curious as to what is trying to load at start up ....You may wish to use a Startup Manager

What is in the list? And did you uninstall the two apps from your initial post?

    Go into event manager.

Right click my computer, and click manage.

In computer management, its on the left side.

Go through system and application logs. Look for a source of MSI, MSInstaller, or Windows Installer in the entries. They are also timestamped, so chose an appropriate time period. When you find them, double click to open and read the entry.

    Post what you find here.

Did RegCure not create a backup of the registry that you can restore to?

    Nick,

The version of Windows Installer is 3.1 v2.

    Adrynalyne,

This is a copy of a couple of entries from the Application log, under event 101
and 104. There are lots of these two events with the source MsInstaller.

    Nothing under System log.

    Angela.

Good job in getting that info.

Do you have Corel Paint Shop Pro installed?

If so, go ahead and remove it, if you are able to reinstall them. If add/remove programs doesnt work, use the Windows Installer Cleanup application.

I used Windows Installer Clean up application to remove Coral Paint Shop and it worked, no more Windows Installer at start up.:)

Thank you everyone for your help. Although I must add it was my husband, not me, that caused the problem.

MajorGeeks.com is now firmly in my favourites.

    Hello Angela

Please accept our apologies for the difficulties that you have experienced.

Registry items listed on the error list can be invalid when associated with non-existing folders or files. However, some entries may be valid. It is recommended that you only remove items that you know are invalid.

RegCure is one of the safest removal tools on the market and it is rare that it will remove something that a user requires but it can happen. RegCure does create a backup and restores easily if something is found to be awry after a cleaning.

To restore these files please open RegCure and follow these instructions:

Click Backup > select the applicable Backup Files> then click Restore to bring back the items that were removed and your prior settings should work. On rare occasions our software will detect registry keys that are considered valid and it will use other shared application files to run.

Or alternatively, if you have Windows XP, you can use the Windows XP restore feature. To do this, follow these directions:

Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

Then click 'Restore my computer from a previous time' and choose a date to restore from and your prior settings should be restored.

If you are still experiencing difficulty, please know that every computer is different so it is impossible for us to give exact information on this situation without knowing your system. The problem you are experiencing needs to be looked at in greater detail. We are going to ask that you send us an email with the RegCure log files attached to helpdesk@paretologic.com

Please navigate to the location where RegCure is installed and open the 'Logs' folder in the RegCure program files.

    C:\Program Files\RegCure\Logs\

If you are having trouble locating the 'Logs' folder please follow these steps:

    1) Locate the RegCure icon on your Desktop or in the Start Menu.
    2) Please right-Click the RegCure icon and select 'Properties' in the menu that appears.
    3) Now under the 'Shortcut' tab please click on the 'Find Target…' button to open the folder containing the RegCure program files and the 'Logs' folder.
    4) The "Logs" folder will include a number of files that are in ZIP format and named to correspond with the date of each scan (Ex: Regcure-18-06-07-09-57-57.zip).
    5) Please attach the zipped RegCure log file to an email, once the log file is attached please send it to us.

This file will help to give us a better view of your computer and may help our technical team to determine the cause of the problem you are currently experiencing.

    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Kindest Regards
    Laura
