I had a similar problem: whenever I clicked on My Documents or on anything in My Computer, the Search dialog came up. Download and run Dial-A-Fix, check everything in the Registration Center, reboot and all should be well! That's what I did anyway....

Good luck and post your progress....

Thanks zbd21 looked at the pages re office problems but nothing looked like the solution.

Colemanguy if that’s not the answer any ideas what is?

    I’m using office 2003 v.11 sp2 xp pro

And the problem is when I use the search function I get the message below and it also happens if I open my documents from the start menu – and I have just checked now - it does not happen when I open my documents from inside my computer so that’s no problem but I am missing being able to search for files and documents.

You didnt really try this tool, if the problem persisted.

Its used to remove applications from the the registry..uninstalling them without removing any files.

So yes, you need to run this tool, remove and then reinstall Office. Back up any important files first, such as your Outlook pst.

Then office never was the problem. Right click my computer, and choose manage. Go through your application and system event logs and look for a source of msi, or windows installer. Open it up, and find out what application keeps doing this.

Do you have this program installed?

    SolidWorks 2004

If so, remove it with the WIndows Install Cleanup utility. Its broken. Note, this removes its registry entries, and will no longer be useable afterwards.

    Hi Adrynalyne

thanks for that - it worked!!!!!

noobish question - how could you tell I had solid works installed?

Not bad for a MAC man! had a quick look at your blog it would be interesting to see your comments on parallels and pear pc - I have used both and parallels is fast and stable with both XP and osx pear pc is a pain at the moment but shows signs of being really good - and boot camp but who wants to reboot every time?

    Thanks again -

This answer would require quite a bit of Google work. Its not painfully obvious.

I only knew about it because of the Intel Modules thing in the message. I've dealt with it before:

As for me being a Mac guy...90% of my expertise is still in the win32 world. I only branched out to Linux and OS X in the last couple years, and liked what I saw :D

I'm not sure how relevant this may be, but hopefully it helps. If you've downloaded Bit Torrents or Limewire, this may be the cause of the problem. As my mate downloaded it yesterday and now he cxant use Outlook Express or access the recycle bin. The win installer keeps popping up asking for an alternate directory for a .cab file from office 11, namely this file: 511735.MAINSPIop.msp We tried to delete limewire and bit torrents, i ended up sifting through the registry with the anti virus software as my guide. basically the file becomes corrupt or damaged due to the virus reproducing itself within the limeWire folder. Annihilate it from the registry and restart, then go to the microsoft site and download the Office 2003 patch, the one that covers Outlook Express, hopefully this sorts it for you.
