    Hello.

Recently I was having malware and blue screen problems with my computer, i got the malware problems fixed thanks to this forum, but the blue screens wouldnt go away. usually my computer would just freeze every 10 minutes or so, or when ever i open a new program or something. once i get a blue screen it takes me several restarts to start up windows.

anyways, a few days ago i had another blue screen and instead of starting windows the computer ran a harddive check, which i canceled midway because it took too long (wasnt the best decision) and now when i start windows after many many restarts, i just get a blank screen no desktop or anything.

anything i can do? or is this the end of my windows?

Please post the make and model of your computer and the version of Windows you are/were running including service pack if any.

It is quite possible there are problems with the hard drive because chkdsk started. But upon completion, it may have stated that the hard drive was OK.

Did you have any important files on the hard drive? There may be a way to recover those.

We'll have a better idea once you post the requested information.

I'm sure mdonah would have told you, but, just for the record, never interrupt a chkdsk operation...

Found this quote on the subject in a thread on a different site:

My two pennyworth - when you finally get it sorted start taking monthly disk images. There isn't any disaster other than mobo failure that it can't recover from.

Hi my friend , you could remove your hdd connecting in another computer to ensure your hdd isn't faulty :wave

Have you tried to use a Utility boot disk? Like:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ultimate_boot_cd_(ubcd).html

It has several tools that can check your hardware and OS for common issues.

The blank screen is worrisome, though. On reboot do you get anything at all from the BIOS? If not, it could be your video card is the culprit, and if your board has onboard video you could pull your Nvidia card and try the onboard. What model is your ASUS board?

As this is a custom build it won't have a recovery partition, so that's out, and as you seem not to have created a Win 7 system repair disk and have not been backing up your system at all you really have been riding bareback! A Win 7 system repair disk would, through its Repair function, try to correct any errors in your boot configuration automatically, and if that doesn't fix it then it gives access to a command prompt where you can try a number of other ways to get Windows booting again.

Win 7 system repair disks are not, AFAIK, freely available as you are supposed to create your own from your own licensed version. However I have 64 bit Win 7 Pro and if that's your version I am prepared to try uploading an iso somewhere so you can d/load it and burn a disc on a working computer.

You will have to PM me if you want to go down that road, otherwise it looks very much like a reinstall will be necessary.

Those disk isos are rare as hens' teeth these days - good find plodr and thanks for saving me a 296mb upload ;)

You're welcome. I hope I don't need to use them. I follow the rule, "you can never have too many repair tools!".

Thanks plodr. I downloaded the 32 bit version in preparation for my switch from XP Pro to 7 Pro which will happen next month. I'm tired of XP barfing. :(

    Thats great!!

problem is though, i have no way to burn it on a CD at the moment. is it possible to put it on a USB instead?

im using the OS on my motherboard at the moment. "asus express gate" and there isnt much i can do on it. im glad i can just surf the web at the moment.

Me too! I have a stack of bootable CDs 6" high, and ISOs of the most useful ones stored on the hard disk. Any of these ISOs can be booted instead of Windows with the help of EasyBCD.
Unfortunately I can't see a way this incredibly useful trick can be used by the OP until such time as Windows is booting again. Hopefully someone can answer the question about booting the ISO from USB. Never tried it myself :(

A quick google turned up THIS. There were others too. Not a lot to lose by trying it - it will either boot the system or it won't.

Well i tried just about everything i could.

i burned the repair tools unto the USB, then put it in. i selected the USB at bootup. but nothing happens. i tried this several times. but i still got nothing.

then i finally convinced a friend to lend me a burned copy of windows 7. which i got to start running, i tried to use the DVD to repair my already installed windows. but that didnt work.

so instead i just formated the HD, and did a fresh install of windows 7. the first time i got some weird error, and had to restart the comp and try again, after that i got more errors. some problem with the partition on the hard drive.

so i formated again. and did another install. which finally worked. i thought my trouble will finally be over. but now windows just restarts everytime i reach the windows is now starting screen.

im literally at my wits end and dont know what to do. i need to study for an exam thats coming up next week. and i cant do anything :cry

From your last post I would say that there is virtually zero chance of getting that box working again in time for it to be of any use in your exam prep. If your primary need is to get internet access and the ability to take notes then either use the machine you are now posting from or grab a Linux live CD such as Puppy Linux, burn it to CD and use that. You can come back to fixing this Windows problem later.
