Windows is saving files in multiple places

I am using Windows 7 and I think an area is checked or unchecked. Everytime I save a document it saves in several areas of my computer i.e., Documents, Pictures, OS area. Even when I had a backup set up is duplicated the backup 5 and 6 times. Now I find these backups all over my computer. How can I correct this please. Now I have been deleting some of these duplicates and I am deleting files I wanted to keep.
