    I have a XP2100. It has a
    System Temp=34C
    CPU Surf Temp=40
CPU Core Temp=49 increasing to 54C in 2 minutes of idle time when in CMOS monitoring.

Fan Speed on the HeatSink/CPU is 3970
Fan Speed on the open air system is 6000ish.

    PROBLEM:
I can not get XP Home to start it keeps coming up with Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking.... Start WIndows Normally.

Either way I do it is will only get to the XP splash screen and reboot to the Mode screens.

I think that it may be overheating. WHat causes this... Overheating.

THen why is it starting to overheat now? Is the CPU fan running too slow? Is the CPU going bad? Did the sink paste melt out?

I posted this somewhere else but have lost it?

    Thanks.
    Jeff

i personally don't think it's overheating, but it would be a good idea to put some good thermalpaste on the heatsink so it'll cool down the CPU better. And heatsink paste is supposed to ooze out a bit. melting... well, it should be liquid. the thermal pads suck and shouldn't be used at all.

I have no clue what heatsink you're using. maybe you can shed some light on that.

what might have happened is a virus or a windows error. i'd run a virusscan then reinstall windows first.

Its almost definatley not overheating. This sounds like a problem with your OS (software) rather than hardware. It will be rebooting because of a BSOD, probably. Have you installed new drivers recently? Have you installed anything recently, software or hardware?

Can you boot to last known good?

BTW, your post was in here http://majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?p=369100#post369100

I do that by mistake somtimes too, its annoying

I had a problem because it would get to the XP splash screen and then reboot no matter which mode I picked, safe or start normal.
CPU core temp varies from 55 and 56C.

I went into the cmos and checked virus protection, rebooted, now it says ...

    "verifying dmi pool status...

    error loading OS"

what do you do from here?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Have not installed any new software or updated any drivers.

I noticed this morning that windows did not shut down properly last night. it was still in the blue shut down screen.

just 30 mins before this started happening i was playing mp3s in windows media player 9.0 and media player started crashing repeatedly.

Try re-installing XP home, and do a Repair installation.

Have a go following THIS guide.

    Ideas?

again, you might want to run a virus check first. try to find either your antivirus install cd (eg Norton 2004) or find a computer that will make a recovery disk for you to check for viruses with. the last thing that i want happening is you backing up everything only to back up the virus (if it was one in the first place) and redeploying it on your computer after all that hard work.

Yes its starting to sound even more like a virus now. In fact it sounds like a virus which has infected the System Restore section (the one you restored to with that article). So does windows start up into the GUI the first time around? If so, get your "lifeboat" set up so you can run a virus scan. I would get a CD and load it with:
    MCaffee AVERT Stinger
    avast! Home Edition

And of course update them as soon as you can. Unfortunatley you cant download manual updates for avast, but stinger comes with a few preset definitions.

You could try AVG and use it to create a Resuce disk, as strogg says. There is a MSDOS version of avast!, but it would be a right pain to try and get it loaded onto a boot disk that would be able to read NTFS filesystems. I might do that in the future sometime, but you may as well use avast! BART CD, but thats rather more expensive.

    Here is something...
    BIOS got hit by something?

It was trying to boot up to HDD1 not HDD0.
    Fixed that...
    Now it boots up.

    However,
Programs will not run. Windows Media Player 9, has errors. Won't reinstall.

Lost all connectivity to USB devices. It will some up, Linksys USB but not a Lexar card reader? Again, a BIOS problem.

Finally said ... forget it... reinstall XP.

    Format C:/
    Delete Partition C:/
    Delete Unnamed 8MB partition
    Installed on C:/

    New computer.

Luckily I had pictures and others backed up on D:/ separate physical drive.
