I am attempting to download a game via Windows Live and when it gets to about 50% it crashes with an error message"System out of memory which is complete and utter bull-crap as my hard-drive has plenty of room left on it. Any ideas how to fix it? I've attached a dx-diag file no error-log of the problem,as I can't find where it stores it's error messages, and the actual message is about 14 pages long..

I think the error message is talking about RAM memory, not hard drive space. I wish I had an answer to your problem.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?
What is the game via Windows Live as I maybe able to download it too to test?

Out of memory can be various to Ram or Pagefile which is HDD space.

If you can attach the error log that may help and instruction on how to attach below

The game is Fallout 3:Mothership Zeta and I'm using Windows XP with service Pack 3. I do know how to attach the log,but it's too long to attach as a file without me editing it down severly,as it's way over the file size limit for posting here. I did think of posting it in the message box,but I figured not everyone would want to go over 14 pages of messages.

If you zip the logfile, right-click it and choose Send to > compressed folder, then attach the resulting zip file, it should be small enough.

Right here's the log, then or what I could find anyways,as i had a hard time finding where exactly It stores the messages.

I have no fix for this, nor any real idea of what the trigger is.

What graphics card/chipset do you have? How much video RAM?

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT with 512 mb,but I don't see how this should affect a download of a file,as this is the first time its happened and I download a fair bit of stuff.

Ok, we'll try to troubleshoot the hard drive/data side of it first. Chkdsk needs to be run on the System (C: ) drive.

How much RAM do you have? How big is the swapfile/virtual memory? How much free space does the C: drive/partition have?

I am not seeing this game as a freeware download. Are we sure this is a legit download? :confused

According to the original log, the OP logs into WL, selects a download, it's added to his d/l list, downloading commences. I see no reason to believe it's not legit.

I have run chkdsk/f on my system and it reported no errors.I have 536MB used, 4679MB available in my pagefile and 3328MB RAM.

You'll need to scan for bad blocks, too.
Can you attach a printscreen of Windows Management showing Disk Manager please? Right-click My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk management.

Whilst you're in Management, you could save the Event Viewer > Windows logs > Applications and System logs. If you can save each of these as the default type (*.evt?) to your Desktop, zip and attach the zip files to your reply.

  15. oz_wwjd

Right I ran chkdsk /r and it didn't see to find any significant errors, although I didn't watch the entire scan, I left to to scan and came back when it was finished. I wasn't sure which one was the right log-file so I saved both the application and the system log and zipped them,as well as the screenshot you asked for.

I checked both logs for events during one GFWL login to error period, see the jpg attachments. It gets me no closer to finding the cause.

If we stay with troubleshooting the HDD space (Int13) parts of the error message, either there is a real problem, or something (Windows/.NET/... ) is misreporting this.

If there's a real problem, my only guess (assuming chkdsk has found/fixed any soft and hard errors) is that there is a partition error.
There was a very rare bug that caused fdisk to place the partition end marker off the end of the HDD - this meant that once Windows tried to write a file at the end of the partition, it threw an error which caused a complete data crash - the drive was reported to contain no partition and therefore no data. Until that point (the only time I saw it firsthand, XP had been running fine for several months) Windows works as expected.
There's another, similar, event that could occur when XP is installed on a HDD over 137GB if the install is made from a pre-SP1 CD. Again, all works fine until Windows blows a fuse, then all data is 'lost'.

That we've not seen this catastrophe happen may be because Windows isn't trying to write a file there, .NET is.

If there's some misreporting going on, it may be a permissions 'thing', the downloaded file(s) are being saved to a read-only folder, the files already exist but are read-only and cannot be replaced, ...
Your .NET framework may be incomplete or part of it may be corrupt.
Same for your Windows Live components.
There may be other requisites for .NET/WL that are corrupt or missing.

So, ensure all your valuable data is safely backed up away from this hard drive.

Find out where the temp files are being stored for GFWL downloads/purchases are being stored and empty the folders, checking that the folders are not read-only.

    Retry the download.

If that fails, I'd then try to strip out all .NET and WL. Then reinstall both; run Windows Update/Microsoft Update to ensure all Windows, WL and .NET patches are applied before trying again.
