Please do not tell me that I need a new computer-- no $$ to buy at this time.
I know there are some good Windows XP Geeks out there!
Anyhow, running Windows XP (32bit) and IE 8. Windows Live Messenger wants to update but Microsoft does not let it do so because of 32 bit computer. I finlly got things squared away with MSN Premium mail except they say my mail client is running fine. I told them that MSN will not run propperly without Windows Live Messenger. Please help me to get rid of the useless update that comes thru (and will not take) and to get and keep a simple, working version of Windows Live Messenger.
I already repaired Windows XP (which took forever), which is running fine.
If you give instructions, try to make it so I understand-- I'm no 'puter programmer by a long shot.
    Thanks much!

Do you get any error message or code when that update fails to install? Program updates are not useless; they often are security fixes.

Error code hr:0x80070643 comes up. Asks if I would like to retry, I choose "no thanks." Then a box comes up "Welcome to WLM." It's a joke-- Google it and see how many people have the same problem.
    Thanks for your interest.

    According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_Messenger
the last version that will work on XP is from 2009. It was called version 9 then later changed to v 14. (Doncha just love the way MS constantly tries to befuddle everyone?)

I found a download for a portable version. If you decide to download it, scan it with your av and anti-malware programs before you do anything with it.

Thanks for your help. It is not worth getting a 3rd party anything because you never know what hidden files "tag along."
In the future, I would advise anybody with MSN Premium mail and Windows Live Messenger to CALL MSN customer support (it's free for subscribers) and tech support will fix EVERYTHING; the only downfall is that they do not go step-by-step and you got to be very observant so you can help yourself in the future. I know there is a glitch with Messenger-- it wants to update from v14 but the error code that comes up is a Vista error code. Version 14 will work if the MSN tech fixes a promt/ registry key or two.
    Thanks
I tell everybody I know about how helpful eryone is at Major Geeks!
