alright well i had the old live messenger and now i upgraded to the new one.. even tho i hate change so much when it comes to things i use daily. So anyways this is the build 14 (the one with the display picture on the left instead of right and the green/orange/red border so signify available/offline and that crap)

anyway as soon as it updated and installed it worked fine except for the fact that everyone who isnt online says there email adress like dan@email.com instead of usually saying lets say DaN ' or something like that. It shows there email instead of there display name.. this happen to anyone else? cuz that really bugs me.

Well, you could uninstall it. Then search for remains of old messenger installs and delete what you find. Use CCleaner to get rid of old registry keys and what else might be left. The reinstall Windows Live Messenger 14.0. All your contacts and other information will be transferred from your Live ID so don't worry about deleting old Messenger things.

If you're on an XP you should use Search Companion - the one with the yellow dog to search for residue. You can delete from there.

That might solve the problem as this sounds like a faulty install. Also check your online profile as well as your settings inside Messenger's menus. Your email adress could be listed in the wrong place.

ya ive had CCleaner for a long time. Basicly i uninstalled it and reinstalled facing the same problem. So i then installed 8.5 (older version i use to have) and all the names are there .. so i dont know probably going to stick with this for a while. Im going to try and clean it up before trying the new version again.

since ive been forced to upgrade because older verison would not let you log in.. its being reinstalled and the same problem.

It shows everyone email adress not there display name... only for the people that are online at the moment it shows there display name.

Does anyone know where they store the display name history? y would it show it in older versions??????

Try this. Right click your offline contact and select 'edit contact'. Change the nickname in its edit box and click 'save'. You can also do it by selecting 'edit nickname' from the right click menu. After it changes, also close your current session of Messenger, then reopen as a double check for the edit you just made.

Just as tritonobx said, change the nickname for the contacts then there is this setting in the new messenger (as I was forced to upgrade also) set it to "Display Name" to show the nickname you typed in.

yes i can edit nicknames no problem so i guess thats an option.

also when i change from display name to first last name.. it does absolutely nothing.

The main problem is that from every other version of msn when i upgrades it alwas kept everyones display name.. but the problem im having is that when i upgraded to windows live 2009 .. it shows there email.

For example when you add someone for the first time.. u see there email until they sign in .. then you see there display name right? well i see everyone email unless they sign in.. which i find odd since it should just have there display name because ive seen these people online before.
