Windows Live Movie Maker Help - Reinstall Says I'm Up To Date?

Windows Live Movie Maker (WLMM) came pre-installed on my Win 7/64 computer but it seems to have disappeared. I found a free download at Microsoft downloaded and installed but get a message similar to: Your Windows Essentials is up to date. I again searched for WLMM. Nowhere to be found.

Next, I thought my AV (Avast free) was preventing the installation so I disabled it and tried installing again. Same message.

Next, I thought the d/l might be corrupted. Downloaded and installed from Filehippo.com, same message.

What am I doing wrong? (Remember, I know the operator intimately and he's terminally Irish).

Have a look in the subfolders of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live" and see if WLMM is still there.

I only find WMM 2.6. I wonder if that is triggering a false positive. Next, I'll try removing WMM 2.6 before installation of WLMM. I'll report results.

    Thanks.

In frustration, I uninstalled WMM and MS Essentials. Tried reinstalling Windows Essentials, same message- "I have the latest version installed" but still nothing found. Totally frustrated!

I think I'm making progress. I uninstalled/Reinstalled Windows Essentials and WMM 2.6 thinking the installer was confused with the old version.

Now I get further but it opens with a Windows Messenger screen requesting my cell phone number. I don't own a cell phone!

Now what? I didn't own a cell phone when I initially owned the computer and WLMM WORMED PERFECTLY! I have no idea how it became corrupted.

I need to know if you solved the Windows Essentials issue so can post instructions how to replace the video's sound with the other audio file (in your other thread).

Messenger pops up asking for my cell number. Am I the only Irishman in captivity that doesn't have a cell phone? Being mute, I have little use for one. I emailed MS Support - same brick wall. They want my cell number!

    Nick,

Correct me if I'm wrong (I generally am), but that only gets me WMM, not WLMM. I have absolutely no problems loading/running WMM but there were several desirable new features in WLMM.

Thanks for throwing out the lifeline though.

I will examine my registry and post back tomorrow.

Probably not related but I discovered 25 "very old" drivers, just updated and it asked me to reboot .

You will download an online installer which will allow you to download WLMM.

    Nick,

WLMM is not shown in my registry tree. Absolutely no idea why a new install says it's already there?

    Eldon,

I d/l'd and attempted reinstall. Instantly, I got the "DONE" and nothing changed. Now "uninstall" doesn't find anything at all!

Click Control Panel > Programs and Features. Do you see Windows Essentials 2012?
In program Files, do you see Windows Live?

Windows Essentials IS showing but only 2 components are indicated: Mail and Writer. Very weird! Something is reporting to installer that "All is well when it's not!:(

well don you will need to delete that registry entry manually so that means Run command check box / type in (regedit) then click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,/software/ microsoft/ windows live and delete that key ONLY
now when you run the installer all of the Windows Essentials 2012 program suite will be available to you for
selection. just tick those you wont to install and your done

    Nick,

Deleted key, reinstalled Windows Live Essentials. After about 2 seconds I got the dreaded message: "You have the latest version...!" Capture.PNG

    Nick,

I spent 2 hours with MS Support. I don't know if this matters but my MS account was temporarily blocked due to "suspicious activity". I'm not sure if that is preventing a true reinstall. Since I don't have a cell #, my case was forwarded up to the next tier who promise to reply within 24 hours. I'll post back when I have a definitive answer.

At this point, I've removed all references to Windows Essentials or WLMM.

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall Windows Essentials 2012.
Restart your PC and then go here.
    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-essentials-photo-gallery-movie-maker-2012
Scroll down and to Windows Essentials 2012 download and click Offline installer (Size ~ 131MB).
Disconnect from the internet and double-click the setup file.
Take screenshots of every window so we can analyze what may have gone wrong.

PS You can just click on the second link I posted.

Eldon, Followed your detailed instructions, was encouraged by long install session. No joy 8( I now see a Windows Live Movie Maker .exe, clicked on it. Same message: "DONE, you have the latest version!" (sic).

Reply from MS Support: "Your account was inactive too long and can't be restored!"

Thanks for trying, my friend. If you think you'd like to "remote" my computer, just email me to setup a mutually convenient time. I'm in the Central Time Zone.

    Thanks.

    Don
