I have someones laptop at my house, I'm trying to fix this but no luck. After surfing google for a while I noticed almost ever person under the sun seems to have this problem with their laptop.

It has Windows XP Home, when you log in, it logs out, and logs back in. You have about a 5-6 window to do anything, and everything opened simply closes when it flashes again.

The same problem occurs in safe mode, no luck.

Programs like Hijack this, Nortan all don't work because they seem to be shut down instantly.

Formatting is absolutely 100% not an option, a reinstallation of windows would normally not be a problem but important files are on the desktop and My Documents which cannot be moved and installing Windows deletes those directories.

I really have no clue what to do, if anyone has any idea how to stop this virus/bug please share.

    Well no reply

    I'll simplify my question.

How can I stop the virus from starting with the computer when it is not shown in msconfig and starts in safemode?

This sounds like you have a virus if you go to symantec website you can search the virus database for which one it also gives instructions on how to kill it off. you may need to create a boot CD with the apropriate removal tool.
    Hope this helps.

An alternative is to remove the hard disk and put it on another system as a slave drive the new system must be running with up to date virus scanning before you attach it. You should be able to clean the drive up or failing that copy the files you need to save.

As far as I can tell by opening Task Manager, she has about 10+ viruses I could identify by name, all of which restart through services.exe when shut down.

I'll try the boot disk, I have never tried this before so I hope it works.

Does anyone know how I can make one of these boot disk?

The Norton on the laptop is shut down because of the virus so I wont be able to make one.

Non of these are useful to me.

It's not a matter of scanning the computer, I can't do anything because the virus logs you in and out of windows every ten seconds stopping everything from running.

I need a boot disk to detect and disable to virus so I can do everything else.

It's not that simple. Is your drive partitioned as FAT32 or NTFS?

This is my girl friends laptop.

I'd imagen it's NTFS, it does use Windows Home.

I have to find a way to stop this virus from starting before she comes over tomorrow.

    Any ideas?

You could try the Ultimate Boot CD; however, if the drive is NTFS it will only read the drive and not write. You need to be able to write to the drive to disinfect it.

Sure, I'll just install this program by downloading by navigating to the site and downloading it in less then 10 seconds :(

    Is this sarcasm?

Anyway, I'm a little confused, earlier you said you can run any scan, then you say that the computer logs in then logs off after 10 seconds. You also state that this does this even in safemode.

Have you tried hooking up the laptop drive to another computer, via a laptop converter ide connector? Then, again, I'm very surprised you didn't post in the spyware forums. They usually take good care of these types of things.

Sarcasm will get you nowhere fast on this board! Good and sincere advice was given and the desire to help was shown. You must have a computer connected to the internet because you were able to post and reply, and I've never seen a computer that would would boot and allow someone to access a site, read and reply to message in 10 seconds.

You need to make a bootable CD, with some of the stand alone virus scanners featured in the Anti-virus section like theefool suggested. This would clear up some of your problems and might allow you to stay online long enough to post in the Spyware section. Have a nice day! :)

Though, burning the avast setup program on a cd on a different computer, then booting into safemode with console only, then running the setup utility of avast, making sure that you say yes to the boot-up scan.
