    Pass!

Do you have any links to a story about this as I not seen anything about a Longhorn 2 as Longhorn itself is still an Alpha build, unless some new future project my MS has been dubed longhorn 2 ????

the latest storys to come out from the recent Alpha builds is that Fat32 & NTFS are to be replaced by WinFS ( Windows Future Storage )

I am an MSDN subscriber and have been beta testing since W2K server. I am not allowed to reveal anything, but I can tell you that Longhorn is basically a tweak for XP. I have it running on a workstation at home (off the network).

The one you will be hearing more about is blackcomb. I unfortunately passed up the opportunity to beta that one and I wish I hadn't....I don't know very much about it, but it will be more advanced.

I can say that the OS boots up in relative seconds, the security features sort of integrate some features from the old "usrmgr" from windows nt 4.0. The media functions are quite awesome. The plug and play is unbelieveable.

    I will stop myself now

Code name Blackcomb is what you are refering to as Longhorn 2. That isn't in beta yet and I won't be getting it so I have no idea

Have you read your basic NDA for beta testing with Microsoft? Just wondering if your allowed to speak about it?

Oh, had not paid much attention, so I was really just asking, was unsure whats allowed and not, something like Longhorn gets so much press, I guess leaks and previews will happen :)

i heard about this in a few pc mags some time last year, and from what i saw everyone thought that it would be totally evil and require you to be online 24/7 and microsoft will have access to all your data all the time and yada yada yada big deal its all happened before.

apparently they have given up on this whole .NET thing because of stability in the long run. I presume that the new server OSs will be based on this new core if its so much different. (like server 2003 is based on XP (i think?))

We shall have to wait and see. :)

oh dear god this winFS thing looks like a total nightmare! If you have ever tried to use windows media player media library you will see what i mean! if file attributes are wrong, it totally changes the catagory and so if you search for ACDC for example, anything with the artist tag ACDC will show up, but will totally miss AC/DC or AC DC because its different. plus organising it looks like a nightmare too.

and it will have terrible performance because of indexing service running in the backround all the time! spose its built for the Itanium upwards series of processors where this wont be such a problem....

personally i dont like the look of it

    Black comb is server only.
Windows Blackcomb is expected to be released in 200X (2007?). Blackcomb will be a Server only product (unlike Longhorn, which is Client only), and is the successor to Windows.NET Server 2003. Blackcomb is expected to showcase the full .NET user experience. Blackcomb will feature Windows Future Storage, WinFS, technology as the native file system.

Guys are all off track - Windows Longhorn which is -not- available for testing regardless of your little MSDN subscriptions. Its the successor to Windows XP. The two big things about Longhorn are 1) The new Sidebar based on the codenamed Avalon framework and 2) WinFS (which will be a part of the new SQL-based filesystem storage commonly refered to as codename yukon) Blackcomb was in concept stages in the laboratory and won't even begin to be compiled until far far far down the road, it at all. FYI, the latest Longhorn alpha compilation is 4021.
