Windows Mail Problem

A friend has asked me to help with an email problem. Their email client is Microsoft Windows Mail 6. Her ISP is talktalk.net. Her OS is Windows Vista.

I have followed the instructions on talktalk's website for setting-up the email account in Windows Mail.

When we open Windows Mail and try to send or receive emails we receive the error message shown in the attached JPEG file.

I'd be grateful for a 'translation' of this message and for any ideas on how to resolve the issue.

I looked at the instructions from that ISP for creating an email account in Windows Mail. I saw no mention of mail server port numbers in their instructions, and that seems odd. I suggest a phone call to the ISP. Your friend may need to initiate the conversation since she's the account holder but you should be able to talk to tech support if she tells them you are helping her resolve an email problem.

A couple of obvious questions from another talktalk user -

check that the username is her FULL primary address,
    Code:
    username@talktalk.net
    , not just username

check that she is not using Secure Password Authentication.

    the server name is correct.

forgot to add that the port number 110 is also correct, sorry.

    Thanks!

    We are using:
    Code:
    username@talktalk.net
rather than just 'username'. Everything was fine until it seems her teenage grandson tried to create another account called blah blah. (There is a slight urge to throttle himrolleyes).

So, does everything look OK to you, from the info I've given? I'll check on the Secure Password Authorisation.

Have you have contacted TalkTalk's tech support? How are they? (My own ISP's tech support isn't that good.)

Of course, you're using her actual username, right?

Why are you asking us these questions? We don't use that ISP.

Yes, it all looks ok (we're quite accustomed to this problem on the TalkTalk/Tiscali forums). But if it isn't the Secure Password Authentication I am a bit bereft of other ideas atm.

TalkTalk CS is totally useless I'm afraid. They just trot out scripted answers and make no effort at all to answer specific questions - absolutely appalling. When you ask a question via the website they post a scripted answer and mark it Resolved. The BB service itself is pretty good - upward of 10mbps for most ppl, and amongst the cheapest. But just pray you don't need their help!

Oh, shoot, I should have caught that. :-o

mark59, here's a suggestion. Have your friend - or perhaps you could do this on your computer just for testing purposes - download and install Windows Live Mail (WLM). WLM automates email account creation for many users. Just start the account creation process and fill in the email address and password. Then, WLM will automatically search the Internet for the incoming and outgoing server codes, ports, and other settings. This may not work for all ISP email accounts but I believe it works in a majority of cases.

If that works but she really prefers using Windows Mail, the email account could be exported from WLM and then imported into Windows Mail.

    Hi usafveteran

I not sure if she is too bothered by which email client she uses. She might be a bit bothered at first if it works even slightly differently. Her main concern is to retain the username because it is her late husband's name.

If I need to export the email account from WLM into Windows Mail, how would I do that. I use neither of these applications

    Thanks, mark59

It's easy. On the menu bar of WLM, click on File and select Export, Accounts. Note the location where the .iaf file gets saved so that you can retrieve it. In Windows Mail, click on File, Import, navigate to the .iaf file, and proceed.

Once you verify that the imported account is working in Windows Mail, you could then delete the non-working account or at least disable it.

"Secure Password Authentication" was unchecked. So, I need advice as to what to do next.

Attached is an error message being received. Well, it probably is not an error message but when I fill the fields I then receive the errors I sent with my original posting.

I can reproduce your 0x800CCC92 error exactly by entering an incorrect email address in Incoming Mail Server Email Username in the account properties Servers tab

    Thanks!

How do I resolve this issue then? I don't know Windows Mail. I have no such issues; with my ISP I just use webmail.

It can only be fixed at the computer that has Windows Mail installed >

in Windows Mail - Tools > Accounts > click on Mail Account > Properties button > Servers tab > and enter the correct full email address under Incoming Mail Server E-mail Username. Also ensure the password there is correct (case sensitive)

This process is basically the same in every email client, there is nothing special about Windows Mail.
