    Hello,

I have windows Mail. My IP is cableone. They have switched to gmail as a server. My windows mail is not receiving or sending email. The outbox is not sending. I am forced to use cableone's online email server and I hate it. If I am on a website and I email them a message from my cableone mail, Windows Mail opens an I am unable to send or receive from either one. They are both set up with IMAP. I also have an Android cell and it is messing up too. I have called cableone for help but they tell me that the problem is with my Windows Mail. I have tried to update my WM to Windows Live but I get an error message that says I can't use this mail program with my system. I have a small business and I need to be able to access my email.. I am not too bright when it comes to this stuff. You guys have helped me out of so many jams... Please help.

    Thanks,

    Snow

Living in the UK I don't personally know the first thing about cableone, but I have found this migration guide. If you follow that I'm quite sure it will resolve your problem.

Gmail is a superb email service, superior to that provided by any ISP, and can be run in online, POP, or IMAP mode with any email client, including Vista's Windows Mail.

Are you absolutely sure about this? For an ISP do this seems quite odd. And, the link posted by Earthling implies or indicates cableone has their own email service. when you called them, did that conversation clearly confirm their switching of their customers to gmail?

Most ISPs run their own mail servers so that they can provide email accounts to their customers, where the email address would be in the general format me@myISP.com. In your case, the format would be you@mycableone.com.

Also, if cableone actually switched to gmail, did they not provide you with info on how to make that transition? That would have required changing settings in Windows Mail or any other email client. So, surely, they would have provided info to you on this at the time they made the change.

If they have, indeed, moved their email over to gmail, you can just completely ignore cableone as far as your email is concerned. Just go directly to your gmail account via www.google.com. Here's a reference in enabling IMAP for a gmail account: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77695

I feel pretty sure it's Google. Can't see an ISP providing 7GB storage and all those online document capabilities too, exactly like Google. Suspect the OP just ddn't get the change notification, which would surely have carried a link to the migration guide, or failed to follow it up.

Agree though it's certainly an unusual, in fact unique thing for an ISP to do. Wonder if others may now decide to follow suit :confused

I had to check there in case I had earnestly responded to a two year old thread! :-D :-D

Hmm, so why is cvsnow just now discovering a problem with it? Doesn't make sense. Perhaps the whole story has not been told. ;)

By the way, the link above implies that IMAP is not supported by the gmail service provided to cableone customers; at least, IMAP is not mentioned in the reference.

He isn't. He says he's been using webmail and hates it. Some further explanation from the OP would be nice though.

Well, you can access, just not the way you want to.

I suggest getting a paid email account from FastMail. That way, you're not tied to any ISP email account. You could probably choose the Personal email account from FastMail for $4.95/yr.
