When i do control alt delete and see what task are running, Winmgmt is up. I dont know what it is, so i try to close it, and the little prompt comes on to confirm the closing and i hit ok. well i do ctrl alt delete again and its back. I researched it online a little bit, and it is said to just drain the resources on your p.c., and i have been having some problems with my pc going slow. If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it.

p.s. I ran all the scans possible for spyware and adaware and viruses and all of them came out clean.

How much memory do you have in your system? What is your system specs?

When was the last time you did a disk clean up, defrag and clean up of any temp files?

Also, is there any programs running that you do not use which you could delete?

Do a search Mike and see where it is located:

Note: The winmgmt.exe file is located in the c:\windows\System32 folder. In other cases, winmgmt.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!

Here is some information that I found on it from google for you:

I agree, it can be a virus but read on:
    What is it?
    Windows Management Service -winmgmt.exe

    What does winmgmt.exe do?
Direct quote from THIS MS Doc:

A core component of client management. This process starts when the first client application connects, or when management applications request its services.

Search MS for more info: Link

    Virus Precaution:
The original winmgmt.exe from Microsoft gets placed at C:\WINDOWS\System32\winmgmt.exe . if you find it anywhere else then you should be suspicious for sure.

ok I looked for Winmgmt.exe and I found it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM, which is I guess is the wrong place for it.

    Maybe in C:\WINNT\system32\wbem\winmgmt.exe ?

Don't rush to judgement on this, maybe a legit process.

    Mike85,

Read this article, http://www.mdgx.com/me2.htm and proceed with caution.

You are not getting any error messages and slowing down your system is minimal as far as I can tell.

    Mike85,

    I run ME also. This, if legit, is a core file. I suggest that you do the following;
Start> programs>accessories>system tools>system information. Expand the software environment and open running tasks. this will show not only what is running, but also where it is located. I am at work right now...but I will look on my machine when i get home to see what i can find. I agree with all others who have posted...procede with caution. If it is a virus by that same name any good AV proggie should detect it.

I had the same problem. My PC-speed slowed down to... (0) and I suddenly found winmgmt running, wich wasn't there before!.
After closing it, it restored itselve automatically.
Deleting was also impossible, because it had nested itselve in the windows-system.
The attibutes told me it was an abolute nessesary core of Windows (just like that, suddenly ???).
The system complained about "room to move" and asked me to close some running programs?

I took a risk knowing that before these problems winmgmt wasn't part of my operating win-system. I deside to get rit of it.
Using regedit with it's 'find' option, I deleted all the keys and branches referring to WBEM (because WINMGMT.EXE was situated in c:\Windows\System\WBEM\...).
After restarting my PC everything was back to normal.....

I use WIN98 and for me WINMGMT is a pain in the ass and not an abolute nessesary core of Windows.

Question still... WHAT IS THIS WINMGMT.EXE ???
