windows me scan disk and defrag problems

a friend of mine has windows me on their computer and when they try to run the disk defrag it will only go to 4% and restart and also with the scan disk it will keep restarting and i close out some other program and it ran about 3/4 the way and froze up. the also have pc doctor for it as well and when i tested the hard drive it also froze up the computer. any thoughts.

 

Something is running in the background and stopping the defrag.Probley antivirus software.Unplug the internet connection to the pc.Disable the antivirus and real time protection spyware program and try to defrag.If this does not help on boot press f8 and enter safe mode and defrag there.
Make sure you enable the virus protection before you go back online.

 

Will ditto the last. Running ME with PCillin and Scan Disc and Defrag will not run unless the virus program is temporarily disabled. Ditto previous instructions. Good Luck.

 

tried safe mode and still no luck, they even had the computer wiped out and redone a couple months ago as well, it apparently had one hell of a virus on it. dont know the name of the virus though.
