I have a 1.2 gigabyte processor and 1 gig. of ram. I was told that windows me cannot use more than 512 megs. of ram. I am thinking of going to xp for the speed. is it true about me?

The original article, before some tard at the technical writing company MS uses decided to change it, did not mention shared memory.

i have windows me, and currently have 640 mbyte of ram, and have not had any problems. are you saying that you have the ram, and haven't installed it yet or what? - sos

You can usually put more ram into a 98 or ME box without recieving problems but it can't allocate more then 512. So in other words putting more then 512 will at best do nothing and at worst cause problems. So it's really not worth adding to a computer running these OS's.

It is also true that XP will allocate the memory correctly. However, if you expect to see a big speed boost when you go to XP don't. Most users don't actually use more then 512 megs of ram anyways, and just having more doesn't do you any good unless you have a use for it. For example, there isn't really any games out that will run better on 1gig of ram then they would on 512megs of ram. If it does run faster on 1 gig the reason is most likely because you have tons of little apps running in the background while trying to play.

I don't play every game on the planet ... but the only games I've played where i noticed my PC running over 512 was Far Cry and IL2 Forgotten Battles ... but those games most likely wouldn't run very well on your PC with or w/o 1 gig of RAM

I would first ask yourself what do you need the memory for? Games, or just running normal apps. Bottom line is you may not even need that much memory (512MB) to run a system adequately. Sometimes we tend to load our system up with more memory, when in truth, we do not need it. Again, XP is a choice as well as Win 2000 Pro.
