Windows Media Player 11

Do I need to set up Windows Media Player 9 if I want to download Windows Media Player 11?
I reinstalled my original Windows XP recently. When I put a DVD to computer, I get "Welcome to Windows Media Player 9 Series" screen, which wants me to set up WMP 9. I want to have WMP11. Do I need to set up WMP9 before upgrading to or downloading WMP11? I do not want to have duplicates (if I do not have to) and I do not understand whether WMP11 installs on top of WMP9 or from scratch. If it download from scratch should I delete WMP9?
I also have to know what free codec or decoder will I need. Will the Combined Community Codec Pack be ok. ? May be KLite Codec? Or should I use Media Player Classic that comes with CCCP for video and WMP11 for music?
Please, help me. I have spent 2 days looking for answer on line but I have not found anything specifically relevant to my case. I appreciate your help a lot.

I don't think you need to set up 9. I do not use WMP so it has never been "set up" and my XP computer offers me the updates to later versions.

At the bottom of the page are links to Find Missing Codecs.

I use VLC because it contains all the codecs I need within it.

I regularly put VLC on computers because it just works.
