windows media player 9 not working

until recently my windows media player disappeared, so i redownloaded it, it still doesnt work, it gives me this error "An internal application error has occured", could someone help me with this?

media player dloaded from windows.com, Dell Dimension 4600, XP home, P4 2.66, 512mb sdram, master ...40g ultra, slave..200g maxtor diamond max 9, ATI Pro Radeon 9600 256mb, Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS sound card, really dont know what hardware would cause this since i havent installed anything lately or installed any software that might have conflicted with anything, i am not getting an error code, all that pops up is the message i listed, and also when i try to use the "search tab...nothing pops up, i thought maybe there were some windows updates i needed but, when i click on the update tab or go straight to the update site, the page is blank.., i also tried to do a system restore and it isnt allowing for the system restore box to open so that is no help, this has been going on for 3 days, right after i did a virus scan and cleaned up my pc, which i do weakly if not twice a week, so its pretty aggrevating when i try to take care of it and then this happens and i cant figure it out on my own, if anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it, if needing to email, i can be reached at djeane@nc.rr.com , thanx.
