windows media player no sound?

First of all I have windows 98 and I have the latest version of wmp 7.1 and I can't get no sound out of it.I do have sound through winamp and all my windows sounds work. I'm also having and error message when i use internet explorer. Whenever i use yahoo messenger it says i need to install the latest vesion of IE which I already have installed 6. I also installed the latest drivers and checked for spyware. Can anyone help?
