Windows Media Player problem

I have WMP 11. Now when I try to download an mp3 from some sites - not all - I get error code C00D1197: "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted."

When I try to go to WMP's NOW PLAYING/MORE OPTIONS/NETWORK to check protocols and proxy settings (not sure if it would help, but thought I'd try it), I can't open the NETWORK tab. (I can open all the others, but clicking on NETWORK does nothing.)

    Any ideas?

As a test, create a new user account, log into it, run WMP to open the same file you can't in your current account.

    Hi, akhilles. Thanks for responding.

I did as you suggested, and the file opened with no problem in the other account. What's going on?

Ok, it's a very simple way to test Windows. Works most of the time. I suspect your registry is the culprit. It takes forever to drill down millions of keys. The easiest fix is to create a new user account, move all your files there, and delete your current account.

You can search microsoft knowledgebase for fixes. It will take a long time though.

UGH! Okay, thanks for the advice. Hate to do it, though. One question:

I investigated the error code I get (C00D1197), and Microsoft says that one reason is if I'm not connected to the internet. Well, while I AM connected, my connection lately is sometimes very slow. Since only some websites' files won't open (specifically www.allmusic.com and www.bmgmusic.com) but some will (like www.parasol.com), I'm wondering if it's just because I've been having a slow connection with the former sites? HOWEVER, that still doesn't explain why I can't open the WMP Network tab. So...I guess it really is a registry problem?

Hey, I fixed it! Found a discussion here: http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#networktab, and I followed the suggestion of renaming "%appdata%\local\microsoft\windows media\". When I did that, I could open the files, and I could also open my Network tab. I then changed the name back to what it was originally. Everything still works.

Thought you'd like to know. Thanks again for your help!
