I did everything for malware and everything came up negative. Now I am in the software forum. Recently about a month my windows media player will open randomly. When it does this i have to wait about 10 minutes before I can close it. If I try to close it from the desktop it reopens up, and trying to close it from the task bar does nothing. When it is open no other programs will work because it keeps going back to the task bar windows media player. No files are associated with wmp anymore and I have deleted it from my add/remove program list, yet I can't seem to close it once it opens up. Hopefully someone out there has had or knows how to fix this problem.

Did you installed Ccleaner and check in startup programs the wmp isn't being initialized?

    or:

    Start > Run > msconfig

And check in Startup / Services, look for something about WMP.

    Tell us results.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

You might also go through WMP's settings while it's open, make sure it's not trying to phone home...and, does WMP work?

Just curious: what was the Java error message all about? Better check that too - Java can do strange things to media players...

I've also just read that you might try changing your Windows Media Player Service from auto to manual, and check any mouse-related WMP hotkeys (check any WMP shortcuts' properties: Hotkeys should be 'none')...

I figured out the problem. I bought a razor lyzosa keyboard which has a built in audio button. The keyboard was set to windows media player, so everytime a song is played the keyboard automatically tries to keep playing the player. I switched it to winamp which I do not have installed and it works fine now.

Well I had the same issue as you do, and frankly I tried VLC media player and everything was okay. Give it a try.
