Are you playing the video online, off a cd, off a dvd, off the harddrive?

Have you tried disconnecting from the internet (unplug cable) and play the video?

When was the last time your hard drive was defragmented?

like a regular video file that you download or whatever

no because its not an internet file

honestly never because i honestly dont even know what the defragmentor is used for lol

I realize i'm answering a old post but i am now having same problem.

The only difference is i just bought a new video card, a GeForce 6600. Untill i bought this card I didnt have a problem with media player. Now my machine locks up when i play any video , a file, or live cam or just a link on web.
I will post this as a new post to refresh peoples memories

What happens when you try to run the same video with this:

Click START, then RUN, they type in: mplayer2

Try using that, does it work?

Have you tried uninstalling windows media player 10? Then try using version 9?

Are you running xp sp2? With all updates?

Mental note: Where is that thread that had a very similar situation.

Sorry, but WMP in this link is version 10.00.00.3802 NOT 10.00.00.3923 as M$ download page from 15.02.2005 ( realy 28.01.2005 ) :p

    If posibile reload program?

I've said it before, I'll say it again...don't use WMP to play movies. VLC media player is free, opensource, lightweight (you can open multiple instances - ie play Dark Side Of The Moon to Wizard of Oz), and best of all, I've never had to download ANY codecs. It's worked flawlessly for any filetype I've tried.

You can get it at download.com....it's beautiful. It's perfect. It makes WMP look like a special ed student.

Yes, but this doesn't fix windows media player. I personally don't use it either, I use MPC (Media player classic). But, would still like to fix this.

What you are saying is like what alot of others would say if IE is broken, use firefox. Getting the original problem fixed is the best solution.

I see your point, but why bother? If it can be replaced w/ something far superior, why let it sit on your system? Bragging rights? I say let Microsoft do the dirty work if they want to remain a player in the multimedia field.

The topic of this thread is as quoted above. At no time does the user ask for alternative programs etc. Please stick to resolving the issues the thread starter is having..re: WMP freezes.

    Thank you.

Heh, I apologize for straying from WMP, but is scrapping it not a viable solution to his problem?

I also apologize if I have at all bent the rules of this forum. However, I've not noticed any indication that you are, or are even affiliated with a moderator. Please use the proper channels if you feel I am out of line.

My recommendation for VLC stands. If the user chooses to ignore me, that is his right. But, if he would like to play movies w/o any application hangs, or codec issues, then it is definitely worth investigation.

A.) No scrapping WMP is not a viable option as that is NOT what the user has indicated he wants to do.

B.) At the bottom of the forum index page View Form Leaders

C.) Your recommendation is 'off topic' and once again, does not address the users inquiry. We are firm about replies in the tech support forum addressing the questions posed...random recommendations that don't address the situation do nothing to help the thread starter and only clutter up the thread...once again, and finally...WMP freezes is the topic of this thread.

Arguing with a moderator will make your stay here short lived. The poster didn't ask for alternatives to WMP, they want their problem fixed.

    [EDIT] Good Morning, AbbySue

Oop! My mistake. Consider my comments retracted. Heh, I did argue, but please keep in mind that it was out of ignorance, and that I did attempt to do so with as much respect as I could. I did try to find out whether she was administration. Honestly. I was unaware of the forum leaders page. I had checked the page itself, and viewed her public profile. I apologize for going 'off topic'.

Valic, what version of DirectX do you have on your machine, along with are you running SP2 on your WinXP system? Directx has known to cause problems with WMP10.

Also you may want to reset the settings for WMP10 to their default settings, this includes video and sound settings.

yes, i have xp sp2, but i dont know how to uninstall windows media player 10 because its not in the control panel

To uninstall go into control panel > add remove programs and then click on 'Add Remove Windows Components' Scroll down and uncheck the box next to WMP, click next and it will go through the removal process.

I don't mind helping you out, Valic, but it would've been much faster to simply google windows media player 9 than to wait for someone to get back to you. There's many, MANY, MANY resources available to you, and knowing how to use them is integral to the IT field. Nobody can know everything, but knowing where to look is a great skill.

this is the SAME exact problem i am having, using a 6600gt, i already tried reverting to wmp 9 and everything. nothing seems to work, except rolling the drivers back to 71.89, anything after that and it freezes on all videos and it doesnt matter what player i use. wmp, winamp, divx, etc.

I hope the original post is still around. Anyway, I have some new thoughts on this issue.

First thought: Do you have a creative sound blaster installed in your computer?

The following link may also help:

i did a bit of checking around and its some kind of problem with the actual cards, its not just us, its basically anyone with this card. it is a faulty/unfinished part of the card and they shipped it like that, anyway.
