I am on a Win98se, trying to download a video off CNN. Screen says no player detected. Uninstalled WMP from control panel...went to Micro$oft and selected the player for my system. Downloaded ok, but when EULA came up, I can't click accept. This has happened twice now. Any ideas? BTW...this happened before I restored my registry settings and after as well. Thanks

Have you done any virus scans?

Tim...Yes AVGFree is updated daily and runs all the time, plus I scan with AdAware. Just ran AdAware yesterday. I am on dial-up...darn it...and don't use a firewall. Did have one, Sygate, but programs kept hanging and I was told on dial-up, a firewall wasn't essential, if I was using scans.
This is a replacement CPU from tech at the ISP I use. Mine went bad and he exchanged. Never heard of it...Protek D. And o/s is Win98Plus, which he said was another name for 98se.

Actually, windows 98 plus is an addon pack for windows 98 se.

What browser are ye using? IE, Firefox, opera, etc?

Is it only CNN, or is it other sites also?

Not sure if this will fix it, but try:

Click START, then RUN, then type in:

    regsvr32 wmp.dll (press enter)

    Try the site again.

Thee-- Got message...file not found. I had a problem earlier and was advised by Matacumbie to restore registry to a point before the problem (add/remove in CP was blank) and that fixed that. I had tried CNN shortly before that on IE6, downloaded WMP but couldn't install. I tried it after the restore on Firefox1.5 with same results.

Now, can do you a search for both these files?

    regsvr32 and wmp.dll

I'm reviewing the posts on Windows Media Player & I have a question of whycan't media player play a digital camera's .mov clip? Irfanview can if you have quicktime installed...realplayer can...kodak easy share can. Is there a plug in/

You are asking the wrong person about that. I have something about Kodak, in the Accessories Folder, and real time is installed. But when I click on a video clip on CNN site, I get message that no Windows Media Player is detected.

Tim--No luck. Tried downloading via IE...it timed out. Tried again using FireFox and when I tried to open the file got message that it wasn't a valid Win32 program. Not sure what to do next.

Tim--Am guessing that you are suggesting Panda Active Scan? This link (chose top one) led to Panda Store. I will run a Panda Scan and let you know what they find.

Tim--Dern ISP keeps losing the connection...out here in the country I am on dial-up--took 90 minutes to download the alternate that you suggested. Now, with Panda, they have to download ActiveX, also 8MB, so I am looking at another hour and a half download. Will try it later tonight and get back tomorrow with the results. Thanks for bearing with me. Jim

Tim--Finally got through. Attached is copy of PandaActiveScan report. Is Mywebsearch really a problem? It comes with Smiley's I guess and I sorta like to use them. As for cookies, I'd like to keep the ones that allow me to log into different sites automatically---but how can I tell them apart? Any advice you can give will be apprecaited. Jim

Tim...dern, just my trucking luck...ok, I believe now. Will run CC and then try CNN again and see what happens. I really do appreciate your time, effort and patience with me on this. Thanks. Jim

Tim..We've both wasted too much time on this. Downloaded WMP again (1 hour--again) and the same thing happened. Could not get response when I clicked to accept EULA.
But I do appreciate all that you have gone through to try and help me. Jim

Forgot what all we've tried ......did you do a sfc scan:

Start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have your xp cd ready.
May have to run it more than once.

Tim--Shucks, I think I'm getting 'puter literate--you did mean system file checker? I am on Win98, so mine is in accessories. I will run this later tonight and get back with you tomorrow. Thanks a bunch for your continued efforts.

Tim---so much for my being 'puter literate. Have Win98 disk. Ran sfc and inserted disk in Drive D. Typed in Retore From area "D:\Windows" and got message that file not found. I tried "Windows\options\cabs" and got same message. No quotes used when typing in sfc.

Boot while holding the CTRL key to enter the boot menu.

    2. Select the COMMAND PROMPT ONLY option and press enter.

    3. From the C:\> prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE and press enter.

    4. When the restore screen appears, select a backup dated before this problem occurred and then restart the system. (A properly working registry has the word 'Started' next to the date)

Ok. Restored registry. Tried sfc again. Got same message that files aren't found. I 'browsed' the win98 disk and found nothing that I can recognize as associated with WMP. At the restore from area, I am entering "D:\windows". Should I be entering something else?

Re: Windows Media Player::Solved, after a fashion

Just found out that CNN video pipeline requires win2k w/xp. That don't explain my other problems, but seeing as how I'd have to get a new o/s to get those feeds from CNN, well, I didn't want to watch them that bad no how.
Again, many thanks for your efforts, as well as the others who offered hints.
