Thanks everyone I seen the services tab and the windows audio is already in automatic. I am really in a fix with this problem, can anyone let me know any other program which can run wma.as the file from mtv.com require media player to play the file. Thanks.

IrfanView will play that file among many others and is handy to have anyway. You need to download and install both the program and the plugins.

The only thing I can think of to check is Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then Set Program Access and Defaults?

Hi Insomniac I setup in the custom tab of the "programs and default page" and set windows nedia player as default and try. A popup saying "The files does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.Create an association in the Folder Options control panel" all the files have change to wma logo, now what am I going to do and how to go about it. At the mean time I am downloading the IrfanView and tried out whether it can play the .wma file downloaded from the net (mtv clips). Thanks.

What does it say in Folder Options? Do you have listings for the native Windows Media Player files (WMA, WMV etc) and are they set up correctly?

It sounds strange and the most probable explanation is that a program or a setting has corrupted the file association.

Thanks again Insomniac I actually do not know what is happening with this player and thinking of dumping it. I have a few players installed, Winamp,Musichmatch,Realone and power dvd all are running as normal. As for your reply it did not say anything, when I click the "folder options" as it mentioned in the popup there is a list of programs and something about extentions all are listed, that is like .wma etc, and the players which I have installed. I think I am giving lots of problems to all of you to solve(strange ufo) Thanks all of you if you have further suggestion please let me know.

That doesn't affect Windows Media Player.

Media Player will function perfectly with it disabled and stopped, and is not a dependant of Windows Audio Service.

  13. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    You are absolutely right.

The soundcard is dependant on it. Which Media Player needs to play audio. Which includes audio in a video.

Try WMP in Safe Mode and see how it complains about no audio hardware.

    DOH!!

So, did it work for the author, NO.

I also tried it with the service disabled and Media Player worked perfectly.

    How do you explain that?

BTW, Black Viper also says to put Norton Auto Protect Service in manual, yet Norton only works in automatic on my system.

As Viper says, it's only a guidline, not a hard and fast rule.

Disabling the service doesn't stop it until you reboot. ;)

Or we can look at it this way.

The same way I explain this in which you said messenger removal breaks Outlook Express:

    Quite simply:

You aren't telling the truth to falsify my claims.

That link is for Windows Server 2003, regardless,

You once told me that Microsoft support is written by Technicians and they aren't always right, but now they are gospel.

    That is very convenient.

On my system, disabling Windows Audio Service means I don't get sound, but I don't get service disabled error message which is the whole point of this thread?

Believe me, don't believe me, use Google and Microsoft Knowledge Base, I couldn't care less. I believe what I experience.

Lets see if we can get this train back on track :)

    pengwah:

Go to start, run and type:

    cmd.exe

    Click OK.

    At the command prompt, type:

    tasklist /svc

Take a look at the svchost breakdown. Is AudioSrv listed in there somewhere? This is mine, it clearly shows Audiosrv.

As you can see from above, Media Player does in fact still work with this service disabled and stopped.

I've included as much as I could think of so I can't be accused of lying, doctoring or editing the image.

I even chose an appropriate song for the event. :)

    Dude.

    I'm done with you.

I don't care what you say, I know better.

Screenshots mean nothing to me. Its easy to doctor them. Maybe you did, maybe not. I just disabled it on this machine and got errors. I could give a flying crap at this point.

You are worthless to me, and I am trying to help pengwah. I posted my screenshot for his benefit.

    Either shut up, or gtfo.

  27. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

This has nothing to do with your screenshot.

I'm trying to understand why, so if you know why then tell me.

When I first read the error message, I too thought it was Windows Audio Service, so I tried it on my system and it had no effect.

It's extremely difficult and beyond my skill level to edit an image with an uneven background and rounded Windows corners.

You called me a liar, so I put up the evidence.

I hope you can help Pengwah, and if you can explain what is happening on my system, I'd be happy to listen.

I'm not "jacking" (sic) this one. I have also tried to help the author.

It was you that accused me of lying, so I offered proof.

I knew it wouldn't be good enough, nothing would be.

You are right though, this isn't fair on Pengwah so end of story.

I hope you get it fixed Pengwah, good luck.

Just a quick note. If having installed SP2 and the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" is not started, then I have seen reports of Media Player 10 complaining. Though I haven't confirmed this myself.

Hi everyone I am very glad to see so many members giving the suggestion although some suggestion was tried and not successful, anyway it add up my library of useful tips. I would like to inform Adrynalye and galena1 of the outcome from your reply. I tried to run cmd.exe a popup saying "C:Documents and setting/chee/tasklist.svc. > ERROR: The dependency service or group failed to start". In the properties tab of windows media player Target: "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1. Well I hope this clue will help further for you all to try some new finding. Thanks again for all your help.

  32. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

The prefetch:1 could that be causing the problem? I am just posting this article " as is "

yes u can speed many programs by using this tweak:-

    1) create a shortcut of the program
    2) right click on it then select properties
    3) select the shortcut tab
    4) and edit the line in target box , and add the command /prefetch:1 after the path
    5) this will work for sum programs and wont for others , like on kazaa u just get a error , but on WMP etc works fine :D

so eventually after editin the shortcut tab it should luk like this :-
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1

The command I wanted you to run should actually be:

    tasklist /svc

    not
    tasklist.svc :)

  34. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

WMP puts that there by default. Just means it loads quicker.

I suppose you could clear your prefech. C:/windows/prefetch/, delete anything in there. I don't see how it will make any difference though.

    Do what Adryn says ;)

Lets pull out the big guns. I don't usually do this for people other than customers who call MS, but I am way too curious about the above error to pass this up.

Please run this and email me the results:

This makes a nifty little cab file of a bunch of reports about your system. It doesn't leak sensitive information at all. It helps get a better feel for your system.

My email address is adrynalyne @ gmail.com

Remove the spaces around the '@' of course.

I'll then get back to you on what I find, via this thread.

The sooner you get back to me, the sooner I can get working on it.

Hi Adrynalyne this is what I have with the application you have mentioned I downloaded and scan with it. I might doing something wrong please advised if I am doing correct,I just start the application and the result I copy it and paste on notepad. That is what I am doing, hope to hear from you. The result might be the CAB file I rename it to "scan result" for me to find it back. Thanks.

When you are done running it, it pops up a folder with a cab file in it.

    Specifically:

    C:\WINDOWS\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\Cab

You must let the command line process finish.

    Re: Windows media player att:Adrynalyne

Well, there are definately some issues here...

The reporting tool could not gather half the information I wanted off of your computer. My guess is because there are services disabled.

Looking through your msinfo32 file, there is a problem. You get a Cannot Collect Information error. Note any errors, and their startup type. In addition, see if msinfo32 shows anything.

Try it yourself. Start, run, msinfo32.

So, at this point, lets try going to start, run, services.msc and see if you can start the Windows Manegement Instrumentation Service and The Windows Management Intrumentation Driver Extensions service.

One of the things those reports should have collected were your event logs.

Are you able to see the logs in the event viewer?

Right click My Computer, and go to Manage.

Check all three logs and see if they display information.

If they do, can you save them and email them to me?

    Thanks.

    Ok.

First of all, see if you can enable the Event Log service. Set the startup tpe to automatic and started.

See if the Event viewer begins to work.

Next, check your Windows Management Instrumentation service dependencies in the registry.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\winmgmt

Look to the right. What does it say for DependOnService?
