Have downloaded Windows Media Player version 9 and was told that my version of Windows XP Home was not compatable with WMP. Then downloaded WMP version 10 and got the same message. Am running Windows XP Home with the service pack 2. I do have the old version of WMP Version 6.4 on the machine and am trying to update it. Not having any luck. Can anyone help with this? .......... eaglet

    That is rather strange.

Can you remember what the exact error message was? If not check the event log.

Have you tried to update it through the Windows Update site rather than the stand-alone download?

    I would try:

sfc/ scannow from the cmd.exe prompt.

I would also go through this article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813442

As well, can you give me the names of the third party services on your system?

Go to start, run, and type msconfig. Press OK.

Click on the services tab. Put a check in "Hide all Microsoft Services"

Post the names of whats left in the services window.

    Thanks!

The message I get when I try to install WMP 9 is "This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the infomation at Microsoft Web Site here:" it then gives a site .... http:// go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=28004.

I have tried this and it is no help. I had WMP version 9 on my machine a while back and somehow I lost it. I do have WMP version 6.4 which works, sort of.

Since I am not an expert in technology I think I had better stick with what I have before I mess up everything. Thanks for the help.... eaglet

Well, good luck. You can only provide assistance to those willing to try it. There is nothing particularly complicated or dangerous about the suggestions I gave.
