I have problems playing midi files, with windows media player 11, it acts as though it is playing but has no sound.

Has anyone had this problem and if so what caused the problem.

This problem is only on one laptop which is a toshiba, and all the settings are the same as all my other computers.

I copied the midi files to a drive and copied to a folder on the Toshiba.
I am at a total loss on this one, all I can think of is that it is the media player itself.

I have checked on the sound board and it is part of the motherboard, Toshiba uses Sound Max integrated on the board.

I have no idea why this is doing what it does, but do need it to work.

Toshiba uses microsoft gs waveablesw synth.

    Thanks Tim

Thanks Plodr, but it looks like even microsoft couldn't help. I went through all the steps there and still does not work.

I did find that even RealPlayer will not play the midi files on their new version.

Is there any other ideas out there?

Thanks so much to everyone for your help.

I guess trying to repair might be the next step.
    1. Run sfc /scannow perhaps some system file will be fixed
    2. Check the codecs installed (you might want to compare the Toshiba with another computer)
    Open Windows Media Player
    - Press the ALT key to access the menus dropdown.
    - Follow "Help"->"About Windows Media Player"
    - Click on the "Technical Support Information" link in the About
This will give you the file names and versions of the codecs
    3. This website gives things to try; scroll down to the WMP 11 section and have a read http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html

You might also want to download v11 again from here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=
I'm not sure if you can install it again over itself to see if something gets fixed.

Plodr, Thanks again for a quick response. I had to remove media player completly then do a reinstall. I had to be missing a codec somewhere in the old program, and now everything is working fine.
Microsoft's support system did not catch the problem when they did a scan yesterday, so if someone else has this problem let them know they don't catch everything.

Once again thanks so much for your help as I was at a complete loss. I can usually find these sort of problems and fix them, but this was something that got even me.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. :hyper
Fortunately, you were able to uninstall WMP 11. I've read horror stories about WMP11 either unable to be uninstalled or re-installed in Vista.

I think MS finally has some sort of fix for those problems.

I never said it was easy, and I also lost a lot of music files that I am still trying to recover.

Once again thanks a million for your help. I know that it had to be a some sort of update that corrupted the codec for the midi files to play.
