Hi Guy’s,:confused Is there a Free URL Decoder “Sniffer” out there I can find? I have all the Latest “Codec Pack” Installed” and still WMP 11 Refuses to play a Cut and Pasted URL Like this:

    http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2010/s2917620.htm

< Windows Media Player cannot play the file.
The Player might not support the file type or might
not support the codec that was used to compress the file. >

What is Wrong with this stupid Media Player anyway. Is it my imagination or are a lot of the “Freewares” starting to Charge? Thanks Dasha rolleyes

Has an audio card/driver issue trashed your directsound device settings in the user's registry? Can other users play the media player without problems?

I've had this problem with the removal of a unneeded audio card. Some entries under the following key were missing:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum

    especially the key following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{E0F158E1-CB04-11D0-BD4E-00A0C911CE86}\Default DirectSound Device

Log onto the problem profile and ensure that the problem indeed has to do with the absence of a audio device listed in WindowsMedia player for speakers. To ascertain this, open WMP and
select "tools\options\devices\speakers\properties". Check that no device appears as "Audio device to use". Close the program.

If missing, I would try to find a similar machine that contains these registry entries, if possible, and use those entries as your source.

For viewing that video, what browser are you using? And version of said browser? Also, from the 1st link to the abc site, it is indeed flash based. So, not sure where the wmp issue comes up. Unless I'm daft.

Nope You are not Daft Mate:) It is proberly my inexperience with the Jargon. What I was saying was' that if I grab a Url and Paste it into WMP 11 the darn thing won't Play? It keeps putting up the Error message I quoted. It may be that WMP 11 is set to not Play any of those files. If so' in this day and age It's a Shot Duck! But thanks for your help I will go the erthnet way I still have to look at it and sort it out Yet Cheers theefool Dasha:)

Windows Media Player is normally a pain. Adobe Flash works OK, but I prefer this for a FLV Player. What is also cool is that I can convert the videos into other formats for playing on my phone or other devices.
