    1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Performance and Maintenance. (If you do not see the Performance and Maintenance icon, you may be using Classic View. You can skip to step 3 below, but you must double-click Administrative Tools.)

    3. Click Administrative Tools.

Are we talking about Windows Messenger, or Messenger service?

They are both very different beasts.

No, what you want to do is remove Windows Messenger. The service is irrelevant.

You have two choices, you can go into the options of Messenger, and set it to not startup with windows.

    Or you can remove it.

    Start, run

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    Click ok.

(Do not remove it from add/remove windows components, that doesn't do anything)

This will completely remove it from your system. You will have to reinstall it if you ever need it again.

If you want to get rid of msn messenger --------copy and past this in the run command than you can go to add and remove and it will be there so you can remove it. below is the line to copy this works

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I noticed the same thing, then I had to check closely between your post and the other post.

    Yours:

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    and

    wk990's

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Only difference I see is the capital letters for inf (INF). Same results will come out of it. :)
