Make it easy on yourself. If you have Windows XP and Sp1, uninstall it from Add/Remove Windows Components.

    Edit: endi covered that.

    re messenger

Hi! I did go to the remove messenger website, also downloaded the shoothemessenger program, and it is disabled. I wasn't sure if I should delete it because when I tried to, it listed all of msn explorer also,..not like I use it all that often but didn't know what to do. Anyway, am I wrong in thinking that the instant messenger is the same thing? Yes, it was taken off of my start up menu but when I click on it(in my list of programs), it still signs in. Is it supposed to do that if I have disabled it? The instant messenger was very irritating. By the way, when I did try to remove it before after searching for the target site (it is not listed in my list of programs-so couldn't use the add/remove program feature) it stated that it would not allow me to remove three components of it, stating another person or program is using it.(Thanks for all of the ideas!)

Are you trying to stop MSN Messenger, the chat program, or the Windows XP Messenger Service, that doesn't do anything except pop up spam notices from time to time?

If the latter, you disable it in Services, and that's all that's needed.

according to BlackViper's site you can do this by typing

services.msc in the RUN command box and then scroll down to Messenger, right click, properties, and select Startup Type as DISABLED...

    hope that helps

    messenger

I guess maybe the MSN Messenger. The instant messenger with the pop up chats...the only reason I used to use it was to get to my hotmail quickly, but with kids playing around now I get their friends popping up, so would like to delete the program if possible.

This may have been suggested already>

Open my computer & go to program files. Find the "Messenger" folder & rename it to "MessengerOff". That will stop it dead.

It seems as if I have quieted it at least for now,... only time will tell. The only problem I had with the program is that apparently the last time it was used something was changed and it automatically defaults to the other user, I wasn't even able to sign on(to get to my email). And in the middle of my online class without even signing in or anything, here comes the flashing messages from the kids. It would be a little irritating in the middle of a test. I did go to the program files/messenger folder and was about to rename it and it gave a warning, so I chickened out. If it continues to be a problem,..maybe I'll have to try it. If you rename it and you have trouble can you just change it back? Well,.. many thanks for the info!!!

yeah im thinking that if i know kids (as i am one) they will probably revert it back to how it was before  probably unintentionally. If you wanna stop it signing on automatically as a user when you go into outlook express or somthing, you just need to get rid of the account association for the .NET passport (sorry for the jargon, lol)

    Which you can do :
    Run -> control userpasswords2
    Advanced tab
    Manage passwords
delete any entries that are in there with the ending (Passport)

That should stop msn from signing in automatically. Just make sure the kids DONT click "sign me in automatically"!

What if I use hotmail? That requires a net passport.
