    Hi!

I have Windows XP and I'm having trouble with Windows Messenger.

We're using it to transfer music files so I could make a CD for someone. I've tried disabiling both my FireWall and AntiVirus, yet it says that the download was blocked.

I've used MSN Messenger with Windows98 doing the same thing without problems.

Thanks for any help, I'm new at XP and somewhat familiar with computers, sort of, lol.

    XP
    AVG
    ZoneAlarm

Using a router on either end?

A router? I don't know what that is, lol. I guess I don't know much about computers. lol Both computers have standard highspeed, standard installation, nothing spectacular. Just the basic home setup. Does this help?

Should I switch over to the MSN Messenger instead of XP Windows Messenger?

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Also, do you have Service Pack 2 installed on the XP machine?

OK, you are probably running two firewalls. SP2 has a built-in firewall that is installed by default, I would disable it and just run ZoneAlarm. Try the steps below and see if it helps.

    1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
    2. You will have one of two control panels. Click on the Security Center icon.
    3. Click on the Windows Firewall icon beneath the status updates.
    4. Click Off (not recommended) and then click OK.
    5. After turning off the Windows Firewall, you will get the following error. This error will continue to pop up in the system tray until you tell Windows that you realize the Firewall is turned off. To do this, continue to Step 6.
    6. Click on the balloon, or on the red shield in the system tray, and you will get the screen below. Click on the Recommendations... button.
    7. Place a check in the "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself" box. This will stop Windows from popping up alerts that you are at risk. Click OK.
    8. After you click OK, you will get the following screen. This screen is saying that Windows will not monitor your firewall settings. Just close the window, and you are done.

    Let us know.

Have you always had AVG and ZoneAlarm on the machine?

I recently received this computer as a gift, I did start with AVG AntiVirus, but switched to Sygate after it was recommended by a trusted computer shop. But found I had problems, maybe due to conflicts with the prior AVG, so I uninstalled Sygate and went back with AVG. No problems since.

I did use the XP Firewall at first, but I was told to use ZoneAlarm.

    Update;
I found a setting in my ZoneAlarm, I'm trying that right at this moment to see if this works.

I went into ZoneAlarm and lowered the "Trusted Zone" bar down one notch. Just testing it now to see if that helps with Windows Messenger.

I've tried using Windows Messenger to transfer a music file with both AVG AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm turned off. No such luck. Oh well, no biggie. Curious as to why Messenger won't allow me to do this, but not a big problem here. Thanks so much for your help, if you have any other ideas, please let me know for the future, and it may help someone else who may see this post.

    Thank You!

You will get some other replies and possible things to check. Don't give up yet. ;)

I would still double check and make sure that any security or firewall software that I had uninstalled is completly off the machine, there might be stuff left over that's blocking for some reason.

ok, I found out that for some reason Windows Messenger may not accept file transfers.

I've switched over to MSN Messenger and am able to recieve files without problems. Yay!

    Case closed, lol
