where is a good place to start in learning how windows networks work, and how to use them?

I'd take a look at microsoft's website itself... they would know best I'd think. You can even go to the specific OS to get more in-depth details. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/ is a good place to start as any. Check out the links on the left ... seen networking under the "How-To" index. Search the web and find a hundred more alternatives, I'm sure. "Guide to Networking" wouldn't be a bad thing to type in a browser ... see what happens.
