I have a really old Toshiba Portege laptop I installed windows xp on it a while back. Everything has been fine with. The other day I installed a printer and wordperfect on to the laptop.(I know its really old stuff) Everything was fine until I shut it down and tried to restart it the next day. It turns on asks me to select which operating system I select windows xp it takes me to another screen that says We apologize for the inconveniece, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.It then asks if I want to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. I select safe mode and I get this multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\config\system
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\c_1252.nls
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\1_intnls
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\vgaoem.fon
I am not sure what to do since there is not possible way to get into windows to try and correct whatever problem. Any help please

I have this same problem. None of the options it offers to open work. I am sorry I do not have any answers. My computer is not that old maybe a year or so. Hopefully someone will let us know what to do.

Try this site for starters, have used and modified bootdisk files from this site for various reasons w/o a hitch. Might need to get into BIOS too to insure machine is set to boot from floppy etc. beforehand.

:major :wave Welcome to Major Geeks!
Boot to your Windows XP CD and enter the Recovery Console by pressing "R" at the first blue setup screen where it asks if you want to repair Windows, or install Windows. Before the Recovery Console starts, you will be asked a few questions: one will be if you have a non-standard keyboard. If you're not sure if you have a non-standard keyboard then you probably don't; you'd know if you had strange keyboard 'cuz you'd have to configure it differently. So if you've never had to configure your keyboard with custom settings, it's a standard keyboard so you can ignore the first question. Another question will be "which Windows installation do you want to repair?". Chances are there's only one Windows installation on your PC. It will list them. Press "1" to answer this question (unless you have more than one installation and you want to repair installation number 4, then press "4"). The final question will be "enter you administrator password". If you have no password press Enter. If you have a password, enter it and then press Enter. You should now be at what looks like an old-school 'DOS' prompt. Type this command chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (there's a space before and after the c: ). This performs a complete file system error checking routine on your hard drive. It will also attempt repair and recover any data that is found to be corrupt or damaged, and will attempt to fix any file system problems. It will take a long time. Like a very long time. I've seen it take over 12 hours. Start it before you go to bed and just let it run. At times you may think the PC has locked up; it hasn't. You might even see the progress percentage counter go backwards; don't worry. That's normal. It happens all the time. Just let it run until it finishes (it will eventually finish). DO NOT assume the PC has locked up! DO NOT reboot the computer in the middle of a chkdsk. When it's done, type exit and press Enter. The PC will restart and will hopefully boot into Windows.
    Good luck! Keep us posted!

I think I may be in over my head here. I see a blue screen for about a 1/2 second and it goes back to the we apologize black screen. I went to the bootdisk.com website, but I am not even sure which disk I need. I have been told I could go to best buy or a computer store and get a disk that will load itself and find the problem and repair it. This sounds way to easy! Can you guys tell me if this is true or not? As you can probably tell I am pretty computer dumb sorry.

    Thanks for your help
    Tami

Have you tried pressing F8 when the computer logo is on and before windows boots up?
    If so, what happens.
