My friends PC gets this message at the welcome screen ( This copy of windows is not genuine. You may be the victom of counterfeiting ) When I type her password in I get this message ( The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively )

She had taken the PC to someone and when she picked it up he said the Win not genuine message appeared after he done repairs...........This OS has been on the PC for 3 years with no problems.

I know of a few other people that have a copy of the same OS ( I think it was from a 2002 WIN XP launch ) they have no problems with their copy.

If i'm not mistaken, unless you have a volume license of windows, Microsoft had limited xp installs to one copy per machine. You mentioned 2002 Win XP launch, I don't think they made an exception during this time period.
I've seen some people with these copies of work with no problem until a update was installed or you tried to use a certain program on the PC.
If you are now receiving this message your only option is to purchase a legitimate copies of windows or you will continue to receive this message and some programs will no longer work.

    Hi

May need to run the WGA diagnostics scan http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ But if the place that repaired the PC did so with a volume licence version of XP then your licence key is wrong, may need to call Microsoft Support in your locality to have them manually activate it.

    All Right : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Try downloading this tool check for the Product key Status:

Now, if it says genuine. You are good to call MS @ 1800-936-5700 for free support as you using the genuine copy of windows.

If it says it's blocked you need to purchase a new MS Xp

I know it's not a licensing issue because other people have the same launch CD and have had no problems I formatted the Hdd, when I tried to reload windows it would only go so far then tell me certain files could not be loaded, I tried other copies of same CD, I skipped the files, got a bit further then got the blue screen of death, message said problem with memory managment. I tested the PSU, tried another HDD. Could the RAM be failing or does it sound more like a motherboard issue.

What was wrong the required repairs?
What type of "repairs" were done?

Apparently she took it to him because the licensing message appeared, she has since told me that the message said if she sent UK 95 pound stirling the issue would be resolved, the message also said she had X amount of days to send the money or the OS would be diabled......She didn't send any money and could not get in after the cut of date. I doubt microsoft would ask for money in this way, I think you would be prompted to call them.

She is an indian lady and her english is not the best:confused

Sounds more like a malware attack.

Yes I think you are right but it dosen't explain the problem of not be able to reload windows. As I said, tried another working HDD and tested the PSU, I suspect a M/B or RAM problem :confused

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall reading about some forms of malware that can become memory resident. Wouldn't that explain that.

I managed to reinstall windows, it took over 12 hours to load it, when I rebooted I got the no system disc message, I rebooted with a ntldr boot disc and run it, the machine restarted and the OS fired up. I have installed SP2, ms office and other software and it seems to be performing well. I downloaded the genuine serial tool and got the ok so it must of been a malware scam that said it wasn't a geniune copy.

    Thanx for your help guys
