Windows not loading....

Vista Home Premium on a Sony VAIO laptop.... Vista won't load completely. The desktop wallpaper comes up, but no icons, no taskbar, no start button, no login screen.... nothing. The hard drive isn't spinning and there's no errors, and no keyboard response. The mouse pointer moves but the buttons are lifeless too.... any ideas?

 

Can't you enter in the BIOS if yes make the first boot cd-rom and try a diagnostic tool
program like Hiren's boot cd or knoppix 5.1 and see what happen....

 

Thanks, but the problem has been fixed Turns out it was a standby/hibernation problem where the laptop wasn't resuming correctly or completely. The settings for the power button were such that you couldn't turn if off completely by just using the power button. You needed to click Start > Shut Down, and without a Start button or task bar, that wasn't possible.... BIOS settings were also preventing the power button from shutting down completely. So I changed the BIOS settings, held the power button in for 15 seconds, unplugged the AC adapter, removed the battery for 30 minutes just to be positive that it had turned off completely. It still wouldn't boot completely 'til I used F8 and Last Known Configuration (which wouldn't work before due to the standby/hibernation issue). And.... finally.... a desktop with functioning icons. Needless to say, all hibernation and standby has been disabled while running on AC power. I did test both hibernation and standby however, and they appear to be working OK now. I guess something just got 'hung up'.....
