Windows not starting...

I was installing Photoshop CS. Then I heard one of my harddrives slow down and click, and then start spinning again. The install progress bar stopped for a minute, then started again. Then the same thing happened. And then my computer restarted.... and it continued to restart until I shut it down. It gets to the Windows XP loading screen and loads for a few minutes, and then restarts.
A similar problem happened a few days ago that I fixed by booting from the Windows XP disc and typing chkdsk /r into the recovery console. I've yet to try this again, but whether it works or not, do you think my harddrive(s) are toasted?
Is there anything I could do to back up data on another harddrive?

got any fans in the case?
do they spin when they boot up before restarting? if so you could try setting them as slaves and backup work before they go completely.

 

I hate to say this, but this happened to me, your hard drive is fried. Just to make sure though, while windows is loading or trying to, does it keep clicking, and the restart? If it does its fried and youll need a new harddrive.

 

ah so the clicking is it being fried too? that happened to me a few months back - got a maxtor 80gig, same model as i use now, and it wudnt install, just kept clicking!

but yeh sounds gone to me too!
