Windows NT Workstation 4.0

    ok hey guys,

    I was given an old laptop that's got worstation4.0 on it and i was going to put windows xp on the drive.. so i go to put the xp disk in and it turns out that i need to get service pack 6 for nt and then try again, so i have the service pack on a cd becuase there's no way of connecting the laptop to the internet but i dont know how to get the computer to recognize the service pack/install it on to the drive

    if someone could please help its greatly appreciated.

    Well I presume there's nothing you want to keep of the NT bit, so just do a clean install by booting from an XP CD, rather than trying to upgrade NT

    You may need to go into the BIOS to change the booting order to achieve this though. Put the XP CD in, reboot and watch the screen - if it says 'press any key to boot CD' you're in and you can format the drive as part of the XP install

    If it just ignores the CD and boots NT as normal, you'll need to go in the BIOS and change the boot order to CD first

    Don't forget to ignore the 'press any key to boot CD' prompt after the first time though or you'll be stuck in an endless loop - Once you've booted once and the first part of the XP install is finished, it will reboot automatically. You need to let it access the hard drive though, not boot the CD again
