Windows on Windows...7

Using XP Pro for several years I've had a long and fruitful habit of scooting a window almost off screen for just a second or few while doing something else then dragging it back a little later.

On high grade multiple overwrite deletion operations it may take several minutes to empty the trash and I want to know when it is done.

Now I'm starting to use Win 7 Pro on a Lenovo T520 and it grabs anything I scoot off screen, and pops it back to somewhere onscreen AND often suddenly centered in full screen mode - when what I want is simply to have it out of my way for a little bit. It seems that also there is a sensitive area around the edge of the screen that will activate more jumping around of my windows if my mouse gets too close.

I want my windows where I want them! How ON EARTH can I stop this nonsense of some M$ programmer deciding where they should be and what size??

Please. I don't need anybody telling me how super wonderful the window dance is for them and that I should not want what I want - to be without it.

Interesting observation - I have never noticed that.

But I have just tested it, and it indeed happens the way you describe.

Further testing showed that if I move the window near the edge of the screen, but let it go a bit slowly, then it stays there. If I do it very quickly, then it jumps right back into visibility.

It may have been invented to prevent this from happening accidentally, and I am pretty sure that it can be turned off. Google may hold the answer...?

Rather than scooting a window almost off the screen, you might be forced to minimize the windows you do not want at the moment; at least they will not popup and cover the work you are doing on the desktop.

    Whats this scoot feature?

I guess that as sach2 mentions that aero snap is kicking in and locks the window into a left/right/top or bottom window, at times I agree its not what we need as a user, but sadly it was added as a function and I do actually love it as I need at times to copy data from one window to another or I have multiple Excel or Access docs open.

On my Win 7 it does do as you say if I use a fairly swift mouse movement, but dragging , scooting if you prefer, with a little less haste and it stays where it's put as long as the pointer doesn't touch the edge of the screen.

Yeah, you're right. I can get a window (usually a search/replace in Open Office) off to the side, but if I get it far enough off to be out of the way I end up bumping the edge of the screen every now and then. Every bump makes it come out a little bit more. And _sometimes_ it will jump clear to the opposite side of the screen when I click Replace.

Yeah, there are always those slower or unworkable work-arounds. I've sworn a blood oath death pact never to use work-arounds!

Yup, that got half of it - the Snap part.

If you have any clue about the sensitive edge of the screen that keeps scooting windows a little at a time instead of snapping them I'd really appreciate that too. Anything to put the machine under my control, not M$'s.

    Thanks
