Im new to the forum, downloaded Windows Onecare wunder program today-
It seems like a pretty good program to run as a firewall and vius application.
I was wondering if anyone has any comments about the program, good or bad..

    Welcome to major geeks.

Ive heard good and bad things about it , apparently it is a very good program with a lot of things updated when compared to the security centre but as it is a beta vrsion there will always be a few issues if you click the link below you will see a whole cross section of views.

I Beta tested beta1 of Windows OneCare live. The current Beta is a Public Beta. Keep in mind this is beta software and there can be issues when running it.

Windows OneCare does not come with a firewall it uses Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall is not a true bidirectional firewall. You would be better protected running a firewall like ZoneAlarm Free.

    Thanks for the feedback guys,
I have my doubts as to the vius protection capabilities as well.
The first thing it asked me to do was un install Nortons.Nortons has saved my butt on many occasions and I was not too happy .Whats your opinions here??

Im also running Microsoft Antispyware Beta1.

The reason that it asks you to uninstall Norton, is because it conflicts with Microsoft OneCare. Also the Firewall is now a two-way firewall, not a one-way as it was before. I use AVG with it for Email scanning, and so far it has my kudos.

Browniz,If as spd says it uses windows original firewall which, according to him is a directional f/w,when and how does it update to become a bi directional firewall??
Is this part of the Beta package when I downloaded then?
I have noticed that a balloon pops up to say the windows firewall is not active..When I check this out the original firewall is not active and also disabled..The Onecare f/w is active though..It boils down to the start up baloon..Beta version I suppose..
Im a real novice here..But Im worried Im becoming a ......GEEK!!.

Im very keen to go AVG for e-mail and also Zonealarm anti virus.I would prefer Nortons, but as you say,conflict..
    Thanks

My brother who is SPD, if I recall it has been some months since he has used it. As it states in the documentation:

What does the Windows OneCare Firewall do to help protect my computer?

The Firewall helps protect your computer from two kinds of unauthorized connection attempts:

    Inbound
The Firewall checks any program, computer, or service that tries to create a connection to your computer from the Internet, and by default, blocks them. You can choose to enable certain limited connectivity to your computer by changing some of the advanced settings in Windows OneCare Firewall. See Related Topics for more details.

    Outbound
The Firewall checks programs when they first try to connect to the Internet from your computer. If a program is not recognized by the Firewall policy (A list of recognized programs that the Firewall uses to decide which programs have automatic access to the Internet. The Firewall policy is updated periodically as part of the automatic process of updating Windows OneCare. ) , Firewall blocks the program by default, and then shows you a dialog box asking you if you want to continue blocking the program. Blocked programs are not allowed to create connections from your computer to the Internet. This is important because some malicious programs, called Trojan horses (A program that masquerades as another common program in an attempt to receive information. An example of a Trojan horse is a program that behaves like a computer logon screen to retrieve user names and password information that the writers of the Trojan horse can later use to break into the system.) , can gather your personal information and try to send it out. Windows OneCare Firewall helps prevent that.

http://www.windowsonecare.com/resources/neutral/arrowbluedown.gif What is the difference between Windows OneCare Firewall and Windows Firewall?

The Windows XP operating system comes with a built-in firewall called Windows Firewall. Basically, Windows Firewall works in a similar way to Windows OneCare Firewall, but Windows Firewall only checks for programs that are trying to connect to your computer from the Internet and does not check programs that are already on your computer and are trying to create a connection out.

Because two firewalls should not be turned on at the same time, Windows OneCare turns off Windows Firewall if the latter is running. This does not reduce your computer’s security.

Yup,Your so right here..On recollection, this has happened to me,the f/w asking to authorise a connection.
Thanks a ton for your reply..lots o effort.
All in Im starting to feel more secure toward Onecare..
Your comments relating to another a/v programm instead of O/c??
    And avg or e-mail??

    Nice research, brother.

Yes, it has been a couple of months since I used OneCare. I have not yet loaded the Public Beta to evaluate it.

The AV scanner that comes with OneCare is a fairly decent scanner.

Whether OneCare is for you depends on how much control do you want over your system. Is there better software? Yes. The more proficient you are with computers, the greater the likelihood is hat you want more control over your system, and will install the software packages that suite your needs.

Windows OneCare Live is an excellent solution for the average PC owner.

I haven't had problems with it yet. Only when I loaded MS Anti-Spy on the lappy, that I had to go in and reset Web settings for IE, due to it messed with IE6.x.

Hi---Have been testing the One Care beta since it came out---it has changed over the months and I really enjoy using it---waiting for the final release when it will have Windows Defender added to it---I am NOT a computer whiz and totally enjoy the set it and totally forget it feature of this thing!---if the little circle in the tray is green then all is okay---if the little circle turns to yellow or red just open it up and one little click fixes the problem---little info bulletins pop up now and then with some good stuff to read and perhaps act on---woohoo!---for a guy like me who just runs a little business and enjoys snooping around the web this thing is ideal---can't hurt to give it a try if you are curious---thanks for letting me share---Dave
