Windows Problem !!!

Hi all !!!
This morning when i tried to tunr on my computer, right after that message where it says "Boot From CD.." , a blank screen appears for a while. Then it shows me an error message and says that this file is missing or is damaged "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

It tells me to repair it with the installation cd and so. I presses a few letters on my keyboard, everytime resulting in rebooting, and then stopping at this particualr spot. On my 3rd effort, i managed to start up my windows. ( without doing any reparation work )

Anyone knows whats wrong here. ?? How do i fix this ??

 

while it is still running (I am assuming some flavour of WinXP)

copy off data files and any drivers folders to somewhere safe.

Delete temp files, internet cache and empty recycle bin

run system file checker it may ask for your windows cd.

start>run>typein
cmd
press return
at the > prompt typein
sfc /scannow
press return
type exit to close command window

run checkdisk

in an explorer window right click on the hard drive
choose properties>tools
choose check now
tick automatically repair file system
tick automatically repair sectors
click start
If required click yes perform at restart
click Ok,OK
restart

let us know the outcome.

If you have trouble restarting repeatedly tap F8 before windows boots to access the boot options screen and go for safe mode. You can do the above in safe mode.

My problem is, i dont have my windows cd. I bought the computer from a retail shop, and didnt get any win xp cd with it.

Guess i.ll have to borrow from my cousin. Or is there any other alternatives ???

 

zebedee is right you don't need the cd for checke disk it is part of windows.
Windows also keeps copies of some critical file on the hard disk so it may not wnat the cd for SFC either .

Try them they may be all you need.

Oh great !!!
Im not at home this weekend, so the only time im gonna be able to fix this next week.
