Windows Protection Error????????

I recently booted up my family computer,it has windows 98, and I am getting an error saying, Windows Protection Error, you need to restart your computer, well when i restart it it puts me in safe mode but I am not sure what to do, any suggestions? Not sure why all of a sudden my computer is doing this

Usually when you get forced into safe mode, you can then choose to shut down the machine normally, and then restart. Have you tried that and if so, what happened?

i went to the website and followed the instructions but I still cant seem to load in windows 98, it said to try and change the win.com file and I did it but windows error says that it cannot load win.com in because it could not be found so I renamed it back to win.com, originally changed it to windows.com, any other suggestions?

 

Are you able to login in safe mode? If so does the machine shut down properly from safe mode?

 

yes I am able to login safe mode and shut the computer down in safe mode, just cant login into windows normally.

 

I went back to the old posts,I see some people had the same problems as I did about 2 years ago so I went by the replys and ran the system file checker and found that I had a corrupt file setupx.dll how can I correct this so my windows 98 will load back in again, it seems like I have to use the safe mode, I have a copy of windows 98 SE on a disk but during safe mode my cd-rom isnt active so I cant scan the disk to remove the file, any suggestions on what to do?

Sorry I must be real stupid but I tried everything that the website said to do and I just cant seem to get the stupid computer up and running, I thought for sure if I booted it from the cd-rom and tried to extract the setupx.dll file it would work but its not budging, another poster to my thread suggested downloading the file from a website been when I go to that website I dont know where to begin, there is so many different choices that I dont know what to pick, I know this is s stupid ? but do you have an easier way that I can download the file? Sorry for all the questions but I live 70 miles from the nearest town that does pc repair and I am trying to spare myself the drive, especially at 2.88 a gallon for gas not to mention what it would cost for them to repair my machine. thanks for all the help you have given me so far

setupx.dll isnt the reason for the error...

I've posted the reason the error came up in the other thread, did you even try the clean boot?

 

followed all the steps for a clean boot and I still cant get windows to start properly, maybe its time to get a new computer??, I really hate to take it in to have it fixed again, I could have bought a new computer for all the times I have taken it in to have it fixed, thanks for all your help anyways, if you can think of something that maybe I missed let me know.

well not sure how i did it but the problem was fixed, all i did was re-install my windows and some hardware and now know problem. thanks for all the help and info
