My computer has been fine until a few days ago. When I boot up it says:

Sector not found reading drive C:
    Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?

So I press 'i' for Ignore and it continues booting. Then another message appears:

    While initializing device vdk:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
    Press any key to continue...

I press any key and it shuts down. It keeps on doing this. When I try safe mode it does this:

    While initializing device vdk:
    Windows prot

Sometimes it even hangs. When this happens I just turn it off.

Plz help as I need my files for school.

    Thanx in advance...

    Kasio

I know your looking to fix the issue but if you need data from that drive - how about booting a live Linux distro and copying your data off?
Then find out what brand of drive you have and goto the manufactures website and download their diagonstics disk ( or Ultimate Boot CD). Test the drive & if it passes & you've got the data off via the live CD.. reload the system.

Boot with the 98SE bootdisk and at the a:\> prompt type scandisk and Enter. Have it do a surface scan also.

I've managed to get my files with mandriva 2005

I still wanna know how I can boot into my win98se desktop

Scandisk doesn't work, as it says set the drive to LBA, which it already is.

If you have checked and Logical Block Addressing (LBA) is enabled, I really don't have an answer.

What brand hard drive? I can point you toward some Maxtor utilities ( powermax.exe and 100updt.exe) with instructions to try. I can't say it would work and not sure about protecting your data, so I will leave it up to you.

You might get some more advice later (evening), so wait and see if another member has a better suggestion.
