When using my revovery disk I am getting a missing file error. I am running Windows ME and the error is telling me that I am missing the file "apps inf". It is telling me to copy this file from my windows setup disk into my windows inf file. How can I do this? I am not the smartest when it comes to computers and terminology. I dont know which disk to use to copy the file from or anything. I have three disks for my system restore. I need to do a system restore becuase of another problem I am experiencing. I have tried to boot up after shutting down with the restore disk in the drive as I have done in the past but it isnt recognizing the disk upon bootup. Thank you for any help on this issue.

One fo the disks you have should be the actual OS for the system. The other two are all of the applications and tools sent with a new PC.

The OS disk should say on the front that it is the ME OS disc and give a bunch of disclaimers to the effect of use only with restore cd. Use this cd to get the file you need.

Also, are you running the recovery because you want a clean install or are you having problems with your current load?

i am having some other problems such as some programs locking up. I have done this in the past and it has fixed my problems. How would I get the file from the os cd? OS i am taking for granted means original software programs disk?

The OS cd, operating system, is normally labeled. Depending on the vendor of the PC, it may say compaq operating system cd, or HP operating system cd. They normally also include what operating system it is on this cd such as windows xp home, windows xp pro, etc....

With your computer up and running you can search the cd drive for the missing file. When you find it just right click and copy, then paste to the .inf file.

If you are having issues with programs locking up it may be more than just reloading the OS.

You could have malware on the system. Reloading the OS may fix it for a short while by recopying the damaged files, but after everything is up and running the virus, worm, trojan, etc... will begin again eating at your system and causing the same errors.

Just in case, make sure you are fully updating your OS with all service packs and security updates, and keeping you antivirus software up to date.

If you keep having the same issues after reinstalling you may consider doing a clean install of th OS on your system. This would include formatting the hard drive so that everything is wiped off and starting anew.

when I did a search for the windows.inf file to paste the apps.inf file to, it comes up empty. Could it be that I am doing something wrong or what. I found the apps.inf file on my third disk and copied it but I cant find the windows.inf file to paste it to. There were also several .ins files on the cd, Which one do I choose or do I choose all of them?
